Hi ,

I m thinking of changing over from Primus to some one else for my land line . My options are :

a. Magic Jack .

+ Call US at no extra cost .
+ Carry anywhere .
+ Can send a device to India

- Need a dedicated PC 24 * 7
- Yearly Rate .

b. freephoneline.ca

+ One time cost
+ No need for a dedicated PC .
+ No yearly subscription

- Call for free only major Canadian cities . No US .
- Not sure if you can carry & use the device outside ... though technically I think yes.

For both of the above , we need broad band internet which comes at ( assuming ) $30 pm plus a dry loop ($9) ....

Which of the 2 above is better ?

a. MagicJack - You can hack it to put the sip file on a voip adapter, so you don't need a pc 24 x 7, and can still carry it around

b. Freephoneline - If you are planning on purchasing the sip file and put it on a voip adapter, you can carry it around

Once you have configuration file, Freephoneline.ca also should work wherever you have access to internet just like MagicJack.

Do you want to port your number too? Freephoneline.ca offers that, not so sure about MagicJack.

If you make a lot of calls to US then MagicJack would be better.

Hi Fido,

i am using free phoneline services from jan 2011 and i am very happy with it. I have original regular nos with all facilities like, VM, Caller ID, call transfer,etc... you can porting your existing no with them as well. i think cost is around $25.

Yes it needs highspeed internet which i am using from Rogers cost around $45/mo for 60 GB. You do not needs dryloop if you are using rogers or cable internet.

see the below thread

Hope will help a little bit.....

If you need more information PM me.

Regards,

Thanks RBO and others ,

SS - can you guide how to by pass the PC in case of Magic Jack as keeping a PC dedicated may be a head ache ... ( mine has fan noise ) .

Freephoneline I believe is one time cost and no annual payments like MJ .... I do not call US quite often and can use another service / provider for that ...

I am also considering a Bell Agent who had advertised $40 - 45 / month (for first year and no contract ) for 2mbps internet plus a home phone with 2 features ..... This might be cheaper than having .

a. Internet for $35/- from Acanac / Freephoneline .
b. $9 for dry loop .
c. Set up costs .... ( in case of freephoneline $300/- ) ...
