@ashedfc
In my view , the kind of skills OP is having , he will not at all struggle in this part of the world, rather will be better off in the long run (experience, options & growth) and will have best of both world ! If thought of leaving India was under apprehension, he would'nt have asked friend to refer in foreign land and taken interviews. He can always go back to India, its not right to say it is one way street. People do foreign assignments all the time and return back, if they want.
His concern about savings is already is addressed.
Wow, thank you guys for wonderful and so many different perspectives!
Savings is not my only concern, but would like it to be at least as much as it would be if I am to stay on in India. My main reason to look for a shift is to get out of big, polluted, crowded city Bangalore has become now and being healthy again (Bangalore improved my finances to a decent middle-class level but took my health for it). Also, life is becoming a rat race for kids here (second one is on her way to join the race).
I looked at many places (even got a US H1B easily in 2008 and didn't go) but then zeroed in on Canada after hearing good things about it. Yep, worsening social security net everywhere is a concern and India might turn out to be the best place to live (if they take jobs to 2nd and 3rd tier cities, I'll come back even at current salary levels) in another 5-10 years. But, trust me, life in any of Indian metros has become tough.
In short, my aim is to have a good life (time for games, gym and family outings, money to be able to afford a few vacations) but also would like to have an umbrella to protect from the 'falling sky' ;-) Asmaan ka patha nahin, par job toh kabhi na kabhi chala jayega.
My parents are willing to travel on visitor visas as long as they can (if I finally take the plunge). But I hope Canadian govt will improve the family stream of immigration by then.
About savings in India: most people of my experience (double income) do tend to have 32k-36k equivalent (@1CAD = 48 INR exchange rate) of surplus money per year, but @10-12% mortgage rates, it doesn't buy much these days here. A decent 3BHK apartment costs 120k CAD to 200k CAD equivalent in Bangalore. For my aptmt, I had paid only 70k CAD in 2005.
Thanks for the suggestions. I still have three weeks time to submit the papers (I am also waiting on my wife's job transfer request. Luckily they have similar jobs in Vancouver, but transfer is not easy these days). So, I hope I will make a good decision for myself by then :-)
Thanks,
Shan
Are there Indian nannies available at these rates (1500) and do they live-in with us?
Thanks,
Shan
My friend works out of Montreal and he says life there is very different and he has not much idea about Vancouver. He warned me about two things: in case of a job loss, getting another job is not as fast as it is in the US, and I might never be able to get my parents permanently to Canada, since the current waiting queues are about 8-10 years! So, lots of variables in the equation. Gosh! getting the job was the easier part!! I hope the paper work (if I pull the trigger) goes on smooth too.
