To uk - "Why keep searching for success stories. Make one" - Thanks, I would say that's the most positive comment.

To all those who keep telling that having my husband in IT is an advantage, just one basic question.
When we decided that we would apply for Canada, I applied as principal applicant because IT was not in the qualifying occupations & mine was. If a person who has experience in the occupation mentioned by the government cant get a job then why do they have it in there?

Credential assessment - Very very important word. There was news that the Canadian government is going to setup a website to guide new immigrants in the application process to get their credentials assessed before they enter Canada. Is that up? Is there any other way to do it?

Good discussion. So far I have not seen a single person back off from their decision to migrate even after getting real feedback from CD's except maybe the guy from Bombay who went back and then later came back pursuing MBA. The main reason I believe is the time it takes to complete the process ( 3-5 years). After waiting for so long, no one would want to give up on the dreams without trying. I can relate to that.

The trend may change in the near future as nowadays the applications processing is completed in less than a year. Regardless of the outcome, I commend the sincerity by seniors in giving real feedback; at least that will help the future Canadians prepare for the worst case scenario.

Keep up the good discussion!!

Tip for OP: If you (or your spouse) are planning to upgrade skills by taking courses, doing certifications etc, do it now when you are in India as you may not get time to think about career if you dont get the right job just after you land. Go for it!!

The application processing times are much lesser now, but regardless of that as you said not a single person will back off.
What I understand from all the comments is that the initial period of 2 to 3 years is going to very difficult. If you are ready to upgrade & align yourself then you should become successful.
Can you please suggest what certifications would be helpful? Being a mechanical engineer in R&D I already have a certification in Value engineering, also planning to do a entry level project management certification. Would some certifications on specific modelling/analysis tools be helpful? My husband is in ETL testing, what certification would be a advantage for him?

This place being a hub of Corporate head quarters for banks and other institutions, ETL is one of the well paid area and my guess Informatica is being used in big time here..
People with Good Informatica knowledge and a fair database knowledge / reporting tool knowledge have been doing pretty good..

Search in workopolis, you would find a lot. Getting certified in Informatica (ETL) / Oracle / DB2 should help.

It all boils down to supply vs demand

Until Jason Kenney took over as immigration minister immigration to canada policies didn't have any major changes for almost two decades.

There were occasional changes to occupation lists but those never reflected ground realities

Lets revisit the economics history that has been discussed o this board several times

Manufacturing left USA and Canada to the shores of Mexico and later to China and few other Asian countries long back (started around 1980s). And with that went lot of well paid (often unionized) jobs.

The next round of hollowing out has started, but this time its the services sector (started in later part of 1990s). The jobs are now going to India and a couple of other asian countries like Vietnam, China, Phillippines etc.

Due to automation (which often results in job cuts in other departments) many IT jobs have been created so the net effect of offshoring is not yet visible on the IT services sector.

But I can see and was able to observe (atleast in GTA area) many IT departments are sending work to India at scale that didn't happen 10 years back. And its a one way street. Jobs that went to India seldom come back. while people flock here , jobs are going the opposite way.

The growth rate of USA, Canada is not the same as what it used to be back in 1970s. Those days Western countries were the place to be and china and India had very slow rate of growth compared to Western countries. Every tom, dick and harry was able to get a job in western countries those days.

Now its the reverse.

In India and China every tom, dick and harry can get a decent job. Back in 1970s and 1980s when jobs were scarce in India, many people left to Western countries to find better opportunities. It was easy for them as western countries had a much better growth rate at that time

With the way Indian job market is right now, its normal to feel cocky until you come over to Canada and face ground reality.

That said, I don't want to scare you off. All I want to say is that there is more competition for fewer jobs in Canada.

But, hey if you are that smart person, who knows you can be one of those people who is successful.

Unlike USA where you get a job first and PR later, Canadian system gives you PR first and then you have to hunt for job.

There are three types of people you find. The first group are people who found a job in their field - they settle down quickly.

The second group are people who struggled initially but later found jobs in their own field

And the third group consists of people who ended up in vicious cycle of jobs for which they are clearly over-qualified but are stuck in those jobs and struggle to come out of that vicious cycle. For these people its a sad story of missed opportunities, growth and money all those years they spent struggling in Canada. Every year passes by they console themselves by rationalizing the benefits of coming here - Better quality infrastructure, good for their children etc. Ultimately some in this group leave for greener pastures in other countries (some of them are in this board)

Depending on whom in the above three groups you ask the answer would be different about settling down in Canada.

There is no harm in trying. But inorder to maximize the chances, I would suggest your husband be the one who stays back and you come later.

And lastly, why Canadian government doesn't reduce immigration if there are no jobs or when jobs are going offshore.

As Vandemataram said, Canadian government needs more people to contribute into CPP for its aging population. Whether you call it ponzi scheme or not, there is not much choice left for the Canadian government.

Atleast Jason Kenney is trying to tweak the kind of immigrants we get so that it will reflect the ground reality. The total number of immigrant intake was not changed but the mix of people being taken in is changing.

I would leave it others to answer your questions about certification

Good answer BB but I doubt if lalitha would be able to see the truth in your words !
In the meantime, let us invite her and her Hubby to Canada and increase the population of Canada by 2 without Canada having to have spent anything for birth, CCTB, school, university, Hospital, welfare etc.. for those 2 individuals as on date.

Peace

BB's post covers all situations ! a good post.

Time and individual efforts clubbed with capabilities will define the success or failure of a person... so its worth trying if expectations are like that. ~ no pain no gain ~.

While finding a job, even in first week of landing , you may strike luck by getting interviewed by a company which requires a qualified resource like yesterday ! in contrary it may not happen for months ! are you a risk taker ? most of us will say yes I am ...then take it !!
