Contrary to all the responses, in Calgary, I see too many engineers from asian coutries like India, pakistan, Bangladesh, china etc. In our company, majority of the engineers are from these places. I work for an engineering consulting (EPCM) company specialising in Oil and gas field. The number of asian engieers are way too many. They are good, their experience is respected and they are paid reasonably well. Same goes for IT in Calgary. So you may explore the opportunities in Calgary as well.
Mechanical and proceess engineers in oil and gas field are very much in demand in Calgary.

Very true ... I would add IT skills are also in demand here (though they are very specific IT skills). I live in Calgary for the last 3 years and you wouldnt know there is a recession on. What recession? The economy here is BOOMING ... last year I earned more than $130k as an independent consultant which is the most I have ever made in 12 years in IT industry. AND all my friends in Engineering industry are making MORE. Some of my friends who have been here longer than I, have purchased estate houses ($700k or above) which I can only dream of.
One caveat however: Calgary is NOT a multicultural city - it is slowly emerging as one, however for now it is still a redneck city. Your English skills need to be excellent to get a job here. In my case I lived in Delhi, worked at Wipro in Europe and USA before migrating to Canada. English is my first language ... I can \"talk the talk and walk the walk\". If that is not true for you, you will struggle to find a job in Calgary.
In conclusion I will just say: Follow your dream or live your regrets.

Interesting post.

Can you please let us know the skills that are in demand in Calgary? Also let us know the list of companies with big IT departments in that city

I agree with ashedfc. Also, that's the first ever investment we have made so I would not want to sell it off.
@tamilkuravan - $1000 was a basic figure. I just would not settle for a package that will help me send this amount back home. It definitely should be higher, but we need to have a bare minimum in mind. About the salary figures you quoted, i definitely don't get so much, both of ours put together - yes. There are very very few companies that give in that range.

Lalitha :
You can address me as TK.
If you both together are just getting the salary that I had mentioned for just one person to earn in India, then definitely you should come over to Canada. You can live a better life than that (after the initial 6 months of struggle). With the kind of inflation and low standard of living in India, it is definitely not worth staying there if each one of you is paid less than 1.5 lakhs a month (pre tax). That too with the school fees rate and the cost of text books / uniforms, it makes sense to come to Canada where there is no need to buy no school books, uniforms, fees etc.. Some schools (depending on location) give free breakfast and free lunch too.
I am currently living in South India having spent 9 solid years in Canada. If you PM me your cell number and a convenient time to talk, I can call you and educate you on the good ness of Canada.

Peace

TK:
Thanks for the support extended.
Hopefully, things will fall into place and I will have some good news to share in the future.
