LAUNCHED: B.C. South Asian community praises new VancouverDesi.com news portal
By Larissa Cahute, VancouverDesi.com
Only one day into the official launch of VancouverDesi.com, the South Asian community has high expectations for the site – which it’s already delivered.
“I’ve been pleased to see some of the type of topics that have been discussed,” said Surrey councillor Barinder Rasode. “It’s provided a format for sort of open dialogue on issues that there’s actually no other place for yet.”
“The tougher stuff – that’s the kind of thing that VancouverDesi will take on.”
Rasode believes the website has a “unique opportunity” to create a much needed dialogue from within the community because it’s backed by The Province.
“A lot of the media from the South Asian community … tends to be quite traditional on how they report on things and it’s really not including a lot of dialogue on how we’ve sort of evolved as an integrated culture,” she said. “VancouverDesi is a model of true integration where… mainstream media has taken on a focal point within their own realm and so that sort of provides a more integrated approach to the news because that’s what we don’t have over there.”
Artistic Director of the Indian Summer Festival, Sirish Rao, agreed as he read through some of the site’s content Monday morning.
“It’s great that a major news channel is doing this because it’s usually kind of community run and not necessarily always professional,” he said.
He was also pleased to see the wide range of subject matter – touching on topics of particular interest to him.
“The site has picked up all the films coming up at VIFF and I haven’t really found this in any one place – a composite listing of all the South Asian films, for example.”
CEO of International Portfolio Management, Ali Nazerali, said he finds the site “very useful as a business man.”
“It’s one site that aggregates a whole bunch of different stories which are of interest to me because I’m of South Asian origin,” he said. “It’s the kind of site that I would probably spend 10 or 15 minutes a day on a regular basis just kind of quickly checking what’s going on.”
“There are many news sites on India, but this is one of the better ones I’ve seen.”
VancouverDesi also reaches beyond The Province newsroom through various partnerships that will enhance coverage, provide for journalistic cooperation and ensure the content reflects the interest of the Indian diaspora in Canada, said Fabian Dawson, editor of Vancouverdesi.com.
“As we move forward, we will be developing partnerships with Radio India in Surrey and the Hindustan Times news group in India,” he said.
Radio India has over 400,000 listeners worldwide and reaches about 178,000 people in British Columbia and Washington State via 1600 AM. The Hindustan Times in English and Hindustan in Hindi has a readership of over 40 million daily and was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1924.
“It’s brilliant,” said Raj Patara, H.A.V.E Society instructor and member of the Cycling4Diversity tour.
“It’s great to have something that you can read in English, but you still get a chance to know what’s going on whether it’s in India, whether it’s here – in our culture,” she said.
As part of the cultural diversity tour, Patara knows the importance of bridging cultural gaps.
“It’s great to see that The Province has taken that step forward to recognize that that there is a large Indo Canadian population and South Asian population,” she said. “It just shows that they care and says … we need to inform more than just the western culture.”
“It just promotes culturalism.”

Did someone also notice that the regulars have minimized their postings lately here on CD? Looks like posters have stopped caring anymore, except their PR/Citizenship statuses (valuable).
How many times can you do the India vs. Canada debate?
