Nothing surprising and shocking here. IT industry has been doing this for about a decade now. And, CBC and media just woke up?
Other companies are already doing this. The company I am working with is a well known big corp and have the same outsourcing model. I see outsourced employees being flown from India every now and then. That's why I said - nothing new. If in IT - always get ready.
As for the taxes - why not increase the taxes for the companies that outsource? The very companies making a darn big bucks when lay off their existing workforce and bring in the outsourced company on board. They are earning much more than before, thus should pay more. Simple. Is it not?
I think Govt. has all the money they need for projects. The major chunk goes to the Executives' multi-million dollar paychecks. Until this is curbed or a limit is drawn, get ready to shed more taxes.

I know this might be a routine phenomenon, but seems CBC chose to focus on this particular issue. Wonder if iGate exploited any loophole of new immigration laws. But I believe there might be some collusion between iGate, RBC and gov't at higher levels.
What bothers me most is
- There might be fellow desis who got replaced with other desis.
- The resultant backlash on NRI/CDN of Indian origin.
I feel sympathy for people displaced due to this change
B.C. union pensions threaten to move $1 billion of funds from RBC over outsourcing plans

I think the media has been unfair in singling out RBC when outsourcing is happening everywhere and has been going on for years but they have raised a good point about presence of temporary foreign workers. They contracted the job out to iGATE, so some iGATE employees are onsite for transition process.

The problem has not died. Nixon, CEO of RBC is a moron who has already apologized publicly and thus has set a bad precedent. Such behaviour would encourage more rogue acts. Canada has outsourced many manufacturing activities. I lost my job in Celestica in 2003 as it was outsourced to Malayasia. Since then I have been unemployed/work labor job in Cosmetics mfg or CD mfg or in Circuit board manufacturing companies. Nobody cried for me. Only when it comes to White collar job/Union jobs that CBC and unions take up the issue and other morons join the chorus. Where are the jobs in, say, Cloth manufacturing or Shoe production? List is long. The fact is that all the manufacturing jobs have gone to China, which in turn lends money to USA/Canada and laughs all the way to bank. Liberal morons clap and dance but forget that it is their kids who will pay for their sins. I do not have statistics of trade balance between India-Canada. If it is negative for India then India should take up the issue with Canada. However, India is no China and whole world knows that you can buy MMS. So they keep slapping India on any pretext and sometimes, even without any reason.
