http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2013/04/05/bc-rbc-foreign-workers.html

I know this might be a routine phenomenon, but seems CBC chose to focus on this particular issue. Wonder if iGate exploited any loophole of new immigration laws. But I believe there might be some collusion between iGate, RBC and gov't at higher levels.

What bothers me most is
- There might be fellow desis who got replaced with other desis.
- The resultant backlash on NRI/CDN of Indian origin.

I feel sympathy for people displaced due to this change

I wonder what is new about this. The practice of hiring has been going around for some time now. But RBC and iGate just took it a step ahead. Not only they outsourced to iGate but also brought in workers to be trained by the very employees who were being replaced.

I just wonder how "temporary" workers are allowed in when the job market lost more than 55000 jobs?

I am more concerned about the fact that it is fellow Canadians being replaced by temporary foreign workers (I really do not care where they are from - tomorrow they could be from Africa or Europe).

And I like the argument here...

Dont you think something is amiss here..how is it benefitial to replace a FTE with a tempoaray worker? Above work is IT support and which is always needed. I think the job is getting offshored which is the typical case and the resource is getting trained/knowledge transfer while on temp visa. This resource will go back and do the support remotely. Not saying what is happening is good for Canadians but this is not new. For C level execs and shareholders penny saved is penny earned...literally.
For those in IT and support, 55 is now the retirement age and it will conitnue to reduce so they should plan accordingly. Sharp(er) young brains are on rise and are in high demand and that too in all over the world.
I would say this as more of media stunt..look how it is presented. Actual worker getting laid off mentions he does not have savings and on the other side iGate employees demonized by showing company's commercial. Anyhow neither iGate will be impacted nor RBC. Media's TRP will get a little bump and life will move on.

You are correct. Two issues - outsourcing and TFW are being confused here.

However I sincerely hope this out roar addresses the TFW issue. How can over 375000 TFW be present in Canada when the unemployment rate is high and we are constantly fed reports that economy is not doing good and jobs are being lost. I read reports that the TFW is abused to such an extent that there are TFW working in Timmy's and restaurants. I do not know how accurate these reports are.

It would be interesting to see the IT outsourcing within CBC only :)

I watched this on two different occasions. They have compiled it for the public.

You can call it their semantics. You can call it by any name. They are smooth and well oiled. I feel sorry for those who got shafted.

Couldn't they have assimilated them into a different office and kept them going or asked the iGate to employ them in their work force here or anywhere else?

Nothing surprising and shocking here. IT industry has been doing this for about a decade now. And, CBC and media just woke up?

A layperson doesn't have any idea as to how IT operations these days are being conducted. People who complain and crib about RBC and planning to TAKE THEIR MONEY ELSEWHERE don't even know that every major Bank in Canada/US, the whole Telecom sector have this hiring/outsourcing practices prevalent in the present day and age.

Rogers has been doing it, Bell did it a couple of years ago, Telus is in it. Even Govt.'s own Crown Corporations are into it. So, what's new?

Suck it up, man! This is how IT sector works these days. If one's experienced and knowledgeable in his/her domain - will get another job quickly. GTA still has a thriving IT sector.

Maybe, someone at RBC wanted a good severance and denied. So, took it to the media. ;)
