Hi there,

I became a PR in August 2009 (landed immigrant) will be meeting the 1095 day requirement on November 15th (I only qualify on this date, since i was in the US for a few months on a project).

I have all my documents and I can apply on Nov 16th (if needed). However, I have to back to India on Nov 18th to attend my sister's wedding and I am planning to be there for 6 weeks.

My question is whether I should apply for citizenship on Nov 16th (sign application), and post the application on Nov 17th and leave the country on Nov 18th.

Or if it is better to apply after I come back to Canada in January 2014. I will then re-qualify around mid-February.

I am so confused, since I want to apply for citizenship as soon as possible, but I am wondering the fact that I will be leaving as soon as I apply (but returning in 6 weeks) will have an adverse effect on my application.

Thanks for all your advice and help.

You can mail your application the day after you become eligible to apply and travel overseas. There shouldn't be any issues unless something miraculous happens to your citizenship application (within the six weeks) which requires you to be present in Canada (unlikely).

Great! Thanks!

I have my room-mate who will be checking my mail during my time I am away and if needed, I will be able to come back to Canada within 1 week.

First go to online residence counter and print calculations as of Nov 16. if eligible you are good to go...

Speaking from personal experience , I would strongly recommend keeping a cushion of 1 month in excess after 1095 days .

I did it bang on the day I qualified and during the test they pointed me to a day when I had reached Canada and said that on that day I was in India too per my passport ...

I got a residence questionnaire which set me back by an year . Plus all the head ache and effort in arranging and organizing all the paperwork .

Given a redo - I would stay back a month before applying so that there are no thresholds on the residence .

Good recommendation !

Related question originated from your passport talk- I was wondering in case of road travel to US , generally there is no stamping on passport and at times no pp swipe. (or did I miss them doing it?? ) How will they verify in such cases on which day I was in US vs Canada ?

Road trips are difficult to verify, if not impossible. I seriously doubt PP swipes can be easily tracked and verified in a straightforward manner. In any case, to err on the side of caution, it is best to voluntarily disclose any absences beyond 24 hours.

My belief is PP swipes are used to bring up any red flags in the system (prior entry denials, undeclared item checks, over stays, etc) against your name.
