Hi Guys,
I sent my application for Canadian Citizenship on 20th May, 2008. And there is no word on it so far.
I work in Detroit on H1B visa and live in Windsor, so I daily commute to work. I was living in Michigan before moving to Windsor with my family.
Now, we (I and spouse) have my Consular Processing Interview (US Green Card) in Montreal on 16th June. So most probably we will get our passports next day, with the stamping of US Immigration Visa along with the Sealed Envelope.
I am planning to go to Detroit alone with all the papers on 18th June and get the I-551 stamping. And then I plan to daily commute to work for less than 2 months.
By 20th July, my spouse will also be eligible (completing 1095 days of stay in Canada) to apply Canadian Citizenship. My spouse will go to Detroit for I-551 stamping after applying Canadian Citizenship.
So we plan that we will move to Michigan by the end of July. And we will use one of our friend’s address for the correspondence purposes for Citizenship related documents.
And we will come to Canada, whenever there is a date for Written Test or Oath or other related matter.
Can someone point out if there is something wrong with this planning, so that I can make corrections within the time?
Thanks,
AK
My opinion:
-- It is better to get your I-551 stamp when you decide to move to Michigan for good. You could have problems/face questions while commuting to US for work and then returning to Canada to live (since you will be using 2 "permanent" residences).
Can't you commute to work (to US) using H1B for those 2 months?

Hi,
I am not sure whether my H1B visa would be cancelled in Montreal or not. I know that they will stamp Immigration Visa in my passport and give one envelop which is required for I-551 stamping.
If they cancel my H1B visa in Montreal, then I have no choice. I have to come to Detroit to get I-551 stamping, as I have to go to work. I am planning to tell at the border (if asked at US side) that I am planning to move within a month as I recently got I-551 stamping and making my preparations for move to USA. I am not sure whether my reasoning would be honored at the US border.
If they don’t cancel my H1B visa in Montreal, then my question is whether I am allowed to cross border at H1B visa or I have to get I-551 stamping.
Thanks in anticipation,
- AK
