Former South African President Nelson Mandela has died at age 95 of complications from a recurring lung infection.

The anti-apartheid leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate was a beloved figure around the world, a symbol of reconciliation from a country with a brutal history of racism.

Mandela was released from prison in 1990 after nearly 30 years for plotting to overthrow South Africa's apartheid government. In 1994, in a historic election, he became the nation's first black leader. Mandela stepped down in 1999 after a single term and retired from political and public life.

RIP to Nelson Mandela

Mahatma Gandhi. "M" in his name
Martin Luther King. "M" in his name
Nelson Mandela "M" in his name too

I think we all are blesed to have known or seen all three of them in our own life time. What a lovable person each one was, in his own way and promoted peace for their comunity and for the whole nation in their life time.

He has gone home. May his soul rest in peace.

There was this wonderful interview by CNN-IBN Sagarika Ghose with Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Gopal Gandhi about life and times of Nelson Mandela.

Just like the Mahatma, he used simple English to explain how important Nelson Mandela was. Sagarika's interviewing was also good in that her questions were brief and allowed Gopal Gandhi maximum time to say the important points he was mentioning.

Still remember a documentary on Mandela's life on Knowledge Network a couple of months ago. He was truly a great leader alike Martin Luther King and Gandhi. Rarely you come across kind of personalities as he was.

I am sad at this demise. May his soul rest in peace. However, happy at the fact that I have been witnessed to a great Leader in my lifetime.

What an absolute inspiring life.

Its sad to see that you are comparing gandhi with two such great leaders .
Each to his own I guess . As far as I am concerned I see Gandhi played a vital role in Indias division and for having Muslims stay back in India thus creating problems for the rest of mortal life .

Yes I will have to agree with you. It is funny as most of them also feel that they are part of India also, after the Independence.

South Africa was also a colony established by the British, and they had a company there too called the Dutch East India Company. Mmmm India again. History repeats itself.

It is getting out of the Apartheid colony Status (Though Democratic) into a Democratic nation, eliminating the racial differences, within a very short span of time in a cool and peaceful manner by Nelson Mandela elevated his stature to who he was and what Republic of South Africa has become today.

I take my hats off to a great statesman as well.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

FH.

Don't want to digress, but couldn't resist commenting about Gandhi. Despite of his failures (I admit he had far too many), you can't deny that he was a great leader. How then can you explain the whole nation used to be stirred up with his single call either for 'Satyagraha' or Quit India movement, nonetheless the result thereof.

Try to read what he (Gandhi) did in South Africa during his short stint, and how Mandela's own actions and life was inspired by him.

Give credit where it's due.
