I have been in Canada for nearly 2 years and want to get my wife and kids whose PR have expired (same with mine). I have now started working and purchased a residence.
Should I apply for a temporary entry permit or should I sponsor them (after I have completed 2 out of 5 years)?
Any insights would be useful.
Thanks
Joseph

Your question does not provide sufficient information for an analysis and a decent response. Yet, I will make an attempt at providing you with a plausible response that you will get from an I.O. in Delhi, based on the information provided here.

You say you have completed TWO out of FIVE years and renewed your PR card. Did your family get into Canada and also obtained their PR Card??

Since, your family did not use the COPR provided to them and depart from
India prior to its expiry, the Immigration Officer will request for a SECOND medical examination with the secondary requirements to fulfill the entry requirements and also a P.C.Certificate and the required fees to provide you with a second COPR. This requirement is called for, if your family did not enter and obtain their PRCard. On the contrary, if they have their PR Card, then, ask for a TRAVEL DOCUMENT. You will have to provide the required documents and an application with suitable fees. The option is at the discretion of the Immigration Officer. (I.O.)

Does this help?

Senior desi - thank you for your response. It does narrow my doubt on the approach I need to take. My family did enter canada and got their PR cards. I will renew my PR in a couple of months. And after I have submitted my application, I intend to process papers for my wife and kids all of whom now have expired PRs.
From what I understand, you suggest that I should apply for a TRAVEL DOCUMENT.

Does my wife apply for temporary entry permit or Do I apply for TRAVEL DOCUMENT for them?
Can I apply simultaneously for renewal of my PR and TRAVEL DOCUMENT for my family or should I do it sequentially?

Thank you once again.

You first apply for your PR renewal. After you fill and send the form, with the fees, you can heave a sigh of relief. I am sure you will know if you do qualify for the same.
When you know that you do qualify, you can request the CHC in India, or with any VHS office for a TRAVEL PERMIT.

Within a few days, you will hear from them as to the lapse of not putting in enough time with in Canada. Since you are a PR in Canada, they might overlook the same. They will issue a travel permit for each person for whom you applied for. That is the best you can hope for.

The only excuse you can give at the point of entry is, that there was some one near and dear was very seriouly ill and had to postpone the travels till that person recovered. Your spouse had to care for that person. (Humanitarian Grounds)
