Hello everyone,

I recently moved into new home in the month of March. It was not bad for March and April (or may be I did not notice the symptoms). Since May 1st I have been suffering with Allergic Rhinitis i.e. Sneezing, Nasal Congestion etc. I also get hives on my body. I went to the doctor, he prescribed me Reactine and Cortecosteriod Nasal Spary. Both of them are not good for long term use. However I realized that my symptoms are bad inside the house. I went to allergist to do allergy testing. It was found that I am allergic to Dust Mites. Now I don’t know how to get my house in a better shape that is dust mite free. Should I rip off my carpets in my bedroom? My living room has laminate. Has any one experienced this kind of situation before? Any suggestions/advice would be really helpful to me.

I did not know you had carpets there in your house that generate all of the dust that you are experiencing. Most of us have a decent Vaccuum Cleaner and we do it once a week or there abouts. Currently there are robots that are available that do the same dust removal as frequesntly as you want and once it gets done heads back to the charging stand. So, to avoid repetition, you can buy this and it will save you a lot of the chores that you will have to repeat and to get on top of it. So, it is an investment in your health.

Also there are ergonomic dust removers and filetering fans that you can use close by where ever you normally park yourself in a room. That will keep up the removal process on a continuing basis.

Since this dust removal is a Mechanical process, I am giving you all of the devices that I have come across. But the proper removal has to get done by an expert who knows what are all of the pifalls we all are into and overcome the dust that you need to get removed from your local environment. You may even have to wear a mask to minimise it at work, your travels and within the four walls of your house, till you over come this debilitating handicap.

Hope this helps.

FH.

Well the thing is I have tried cleaning the carpets frequently using good vaccum cleaner. I also did shampoo cleaning of the carpets, but for some reason I dont know what is causing this dust mite allergy and for that matter it was not that bad till May. Also when I was living in the apartment before this, there were no carpets and I never had issues. So just trying to find out if it is the carpet which might be causing this.

Make sure you wash your sheets and pillow covers in hot water atleast once a week and comforters and bedspreads once a month. Make sure you use hot water as cold water does not kill dust mites.

so many reasons to get dust inside house.

1. are you opening your window in day or night time? which allows most of dust to comes in house.

2. are you in heavy traffic area? means lots of cars are passing by house which causing dust to come inside your house.

I have dust allergy.... So I am ok all day - but at night my nose is all blocked - and I always need nasal drops.... I have them in every room and every purse I carry....

Obviously, dust allergy is caused by dust and keeping the house dust-free is the logical solution.... However, there are a few points - your allergy acts up inside and not outside - there is more dust outside than inside - what causes the allergy to act up is the stale air and settled dust - ventilation is key. Open doors and windows are good - let the air keep moving - warm air may trouble you more than cool air - so winter seemed ok - and the trouble started in May - probably your problems may go away towards the end of the year....

Keep your closets clean - that seems strange advise - if there are any folded clothes in my closet which are undisturbed for say 20-30 days - touching those clothes trouble me - since there are dust particles settled on them - get the vacuum sealed bags and store clothes you don't use regularly in them....wet cloth and gloves are your best friends ....keep wiping surfaces where you may touch...

Be careful around books - touching them can irritate the skin - go for clean and modern furniture and design - where most everything can be in closed cabinets and drawers - so as to have fewer surfaces where dust can settle - when cleaning the house - use a wet cloth and wipe surfaces rather than dusting -

Avoid artificial flowers/stuffed toys in the house - sofas should be leather rather than fabric/cloth - avoid keeping decorative pillows - or you make sure you don't touch them - also nobody is allowed to touch my pillow - it is guarded with great seriousness :)

Keep your pillow and mattress covered with a duvet/blanket /bed sheet - when you are not sleeping on it - that way there will be no dust on them

Avoid harsh or too much chemicals and products when doing the laundry - air freshners - floor cleaners - etc... I would suggest you try using only water - including for the laundry.... Avoid perfumes and heavy chemicals - avoid chemicals in most anything/everything - including cosmetics - these can irritate an already troubled skin more.....

Carpets are obviously not good - those should definitely go...

All the best - we all react differently - these have worked for me - hope they help you too....

Last suggestion - try living in a bubble :)
