Sorrry to ear what you and the Infant had to go trough
It is commonly said that common cold lasts 7 days if left untreated and 1 week if treated.
aybe you should look at
1. Does the child go to daycare ? How are the facilities there and how are the other children there as the common cold would keep going around from one child to another .
2. Children get infections easily as there Immunity is low and and as they are exposed to newer environment they develop resistance.
Regarding the Health system here I think it is just lack of humanresource and that multiplies the problem and reduces your choices ..
In india a paediatrician would be accessible that is what made you feel better even though the tratment and answer may be the same

Medicine is pretty subjective. Irrespective of countries, if you take the same medical condition to 5 different doctors, their diagnosis would probably will not be same. Part of it depends of what the doctor is suspecting and how you describe the condition.

In general what I have seen in Canada is that they do not want to unnecessarily medicate a child.

we had the same experience with this African doctor u mentioned TK. my daughter and husband had viral infection. and he didn't prescribe any thing, when i told him my daughter hasn't drink any thing since 6 hours (she is just three months old) he said try again, nothing wrong just cold and cough.

result: my husband developed a Saviour viral infection in his throat and after consulting another doc he has to take antibiotics after having three sleepless nights coz of pain.

other then that we hav a good experience with that walk-in.

Monika,
I looked at the profile of the African Doctor in the Ontario college of Physicians directory. He is from Montreal. He has just a basic degree with interest in Pediatrics. There is not mention of where he did his course (which they normaly put).
And as per MR's advice , I looked at the web for the medicine Amoxillin. It has nothing to do with Cold, Cough and Chest congestion (which is due to virus). This is an Antibiotic used to treat bacterial infection of the middle ear, throat and larynx. Also this doctor prescribed an adult dosage for an infant. The infant is supposed to get 80 mg / 8 hrs. while his prescription was for 250 mg/ 8 hours. I am wondering if this is a fake doctor. Also I donot know how the pharmacist dispensed the medicine (he took the DOB of the infant for the insurance from me). I got the medicine dispensed from a local cheap chinese medical store and possibly the pharmasicst was also no good.
Thanks for all the information. I will keep away from this African doctor.
TK A

Sidenote : WHen we came to this walk-in 3 months ago, Another Middle east doctor also prescribes Amoxiccilin but 80 mg/ 8 hrs. HE also said that he was prescribing it for Running nose/ cough and chest congestion. Interestingly he did not examine the child at all

I took my wife to this same walk-in clinic last year in dec. My younger kid had poked her eye (corneal abrasion) and this happened 3rd time in last two years. So i knew what kind of treatment to expect.

She had been in a lot of pain can couldn't sleep that night as she could not close her eyes. So we go to this walk in clinic (Hurontario/Queensway near Trillium) and This is our first time to any walk in clinic in Canada. Anyways a chinese guy comes and sees her. I tried to show him the medical papers from the last time this happened and he was not interested to see them, so he just gave it back to me. He put a small torch light in her eye for less than 5 secs and starts to write a prescription.

I asked him how bad is it? He says let me look again.

So He picks up his small torch and looks again for a couple of secs and says Oh! no worry its a scratch. I write antibiotic ointment. Put in three times. It will be OK.

I asked him, what about pain? He says "NO PAIN!"

My Wife and I could not understand what he meant by that. By that time this guy already wrote the prescription and walked out.

So, We took the ointment and applied it for four times in the day.

The same night, she told me that this is getting worse and that the pain is un-bearable.

So we again go back to that same walk-in clinic. This time we waited for an hour before an Indian Lady came to see us.

I told her about all & she is like since this is second time we are here, we have to pay for this visit. I asked her if they could really do something to treat her eye.

Then, she told that you better take her to ER in Trillium, since we do not have any equipment to treat her. I took her advice and went to ER and she was better after the treatment at ER.

I wondered, why did she had to go through that pain?

If only that smart chinese guy (i dont want to call these people who work in walk-in clinic as DOCTOR) could have told us that Please take her to ER, we do not have proper equipment here? But no, All they care about the swipe of OHIP card and get the money. They don't care what happens to the patient.

Moral: I have decided never visit any walk-in clinic again!

I don't have time and energy to go fight this fraud walk-in clinic.
