my daughter has runny nose and is coughing. We do have humidifier on . Doctor wont prescribe any med for her. is there anything that i can do ...
Hi,
Which doctor did you go to?...Indian or gora/non desi ?...it all depends on that, I remember my daughter was told to take a blood test @ the age of 12 months only and we found iron deficiency in her.
Good luck & wish her a speedy recovery.
Cheers

Check with your pharmacist or doctor. Usually, cold recovers in 10 to 14 days by itself but it is better to go to Pharmacy and talk to pharmacist about it..if doctor doesnt help...

Hi, 7 months are two small for cold suppressant medicines and I think your doctor did the right thing. I can only think of some home remedies-
-Apply baby Vicks (it is different from the adult Vicks, actually low in menthol) on her chest/back and nose.
-Take some ajwain (don't know what it is called in English) and sauté it for two minutes in pan, wrap the ajwain seeds (hot) in a cotton cloth and when cold (not very cold not very hot) dab on baby's chest, this releases the Phlegm (Bulgum).
-You can give her honey diluted in Luke warm water (for cough).
Hope this helps.....wishing her a speedy recovery.
Take care................Jona
Thanks a ton for all help.
Our family doc is Chinese and he said just put humidifier on and told me not to give any medication coz she is too young.I just came back from Shopper's drug mart and pharmacist gave me Baby Vicks as also suggested by Jonav.
Will try that and also saline drops. hope it works for my little one.
Is it advicable to put a few drops of eucalyptus oil on the humidifier...
Hello G,
Sorry to hear about the condition of your child. It is very common in Canada for an infant / toddler to have runny nose for 2 or 3 months. Many doctors give varied treatment. Ler me tell you what the (different) doctors told me over the course of 2 years in Canada
1. There is no medicine for cold. Leave it as it is. USe Saline drops.
2. Who ever prescribed / recommeneded Saline drops is a fool. Saline drops are to be used by adults only
3. Needs an anti biotic since runny nose/ cold for more than 2 weeks can turn into Pnemonia
4. Use over the counter medications like Dimatepp (Now Banned for infants)
5. Put the infant to sleep on in a car seat at all times.
6. Never put the infant on an Anti biotic.
7. Use Wet Humidifier
8. Never put vicks on the humidifier
9. Use Vicks to soothe the child (nose/ back/ front)
10. Never use vicks.
At the end of the day , I was a confused individual. But what I found the best was for the infant is "Amoxcillin" which is an anti biotic. It works only when you complete the full course. It will the only one which will give relief t othe infant. Unfortunately it can only be prescribed.
What I would suggest is that you take you car and go to all the walk - in's in the city. Maybe a walk in may have a foreign trained doctor who will prescribe the antibiotic. Otherwise we all have to learn to live with this stupid medical system. Even Sick kids does not prescribe anti biotics.
If you donot get an antibiotic, the next best way is the following
1. USe Humidifier (wet).
2. Give honey (1 teaspoon, 2 times a day)
3. Rub Vicks on the nose, chest and back
4. Let the bed (headrest) be in an elevated position to breathe properly.
Hope this helps.

Its better to avoid giving honey to infants.
