Dear friends,

Can someone explain what is this Canada Pro Credit that low income individuals / families get as quarterly instalments in their account each year. I couldn't get its details on CRA web site.
Isn't it a part of Trillium Benefit that Ontario residents get each year !

Thanks

TD Bank says that this is a Ontario HST credit. As you may be aware, you pay 2 taxes in your return. One to the federal govt. and one to your province (Ontario).
Just like HST credit comes from the federal govt., You Ontario HST credit will come from the province of ontario.
There is not much more information taht I can find. TD bank asked me to contact the Govt. of Ontario and the Govt. of Ontario says this :

Ontario trillium benefit
Ontario energy and property tax credit
Northern Ontario energy credit
Ontario sales tax credit
Ontario child benefit (related to the Canada child tax benefit)
Ontario senior homeowners' property tax grant

SS will help you soonest and also FH.

Just see if you need to apply seperately for these credits or if it will automatically come once you file your income tax. That is the key point.

It was a one-time HST Rebate Payment (paid in installments)

What is Canada PRO?
Many Ontario residents received a “mystery” bank payment directly into their bank accounts in June 2010, December 2010 and 2011. The mystery payment of $100 or up to $330 for families was labelled “Canada PRO”.

It was a Transition Benefit to Offset 13% HST. As promised by the McGuinty government, these “transition benefit” payments are designed to offset the new 13% harmonized sales tax – or HST – that took effect July 1, 2010. The new tax will increase levies on one in six consumer items, including gasoline, electricity, home heating fuels, tobacco, and legal services.

The Ontario government estimated that 51 per cent of Ontario families will be paying up to $480 more in taxes by 2012 because of the HST, according to a Toronto Star report on Wednesday, June 9, 2010,

These transitional payments are designed to take away some of the pain for eligible residents.

Here is a link to all of the 'PRO'vincial tax credits.

most of these have been explained to you by the previous posters. So, you have an idea as to what it is that you are receiving.

All of us "WHO FILE TAX RETURNS" each and every year will get the tax credits and it says so in the tax returns that we file. So, if you have not filed your tax return as yet, then you are plum out of luck.

What is Ontario TRILLIUM Benefit package...
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/rltd_prgrms/ntr-eng.html#otb
It consist s of... :
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/rltd_prgrms/ntr-eng.html#oeptc
If you live north in the BOONIES.. they get more...
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/rltd_prgrms/ntr-eng.html#nc
Some of the sales tax benefit (Now called the Harmonized Tax)
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/rltd_prgrms/ntr-eng.html#ostc
OCB...:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/rltd_prgrms/ntr-eng.html#ocb
And then this benefit, if you own a house or pay any rent to an apartment owner...:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/rltd_prgrms/ntr-eng.html#oshptg

I cannot abridge these write ups in a very short time, so please read it in its entirety.

Now it is clear as mud...

SS, couldn't get when you say it was a one time payment...., has it been terminated now, and if still applicable...will it be given just once only !!
FH, appreciate your detailed reply, may I ask if I am eligible for Ontario Trillium Benefit, I am a new immigrant and live in a rental apartment with no source of income in Canada yet. Secondly, does GTA come under North Ontario !
TK, thanks for the explanation.
