Dear friends, Regarding CCTB (child benefits), the form asks for previous one year and two year income from the day we became permanent resident. Now this form shall be filled and applied by my wife as she would be the main applicant. She has never been to any job hence no previous income, but being her spouse I will have to put my income as the form asks for main applicant and spouse's income. Obviously I need to put my income here but my question is, can we put any amount, or it should not be above a certain benchmark or we should put our genuine income. Secondly, income put here may effect the benefit amount that we shall be getting or it's just a formality, pls suggest. Thanks

Firstly, Be true to yourself and the country which you plan on calling your future home, and declare your true income

Secondly, the amount of CTB benefit depends on your income in the previous taxation year

Generally every one puts $ 0 or max $ 12000 as this will give you full GST/HST/ CTTB refund possibe by the govt of Canada.,
When I landed in 2002, there was not even a single booth in the airport to help immigrants. Govt. of Canada thinks that we can survive on our own from day 1. this is your change to get back at them.

SS, I did a short landing in Nov '2013 and came back. Never submitted any tax return. Now I shall be submitting my tax return after I land again in Aug'2014, and then will follow CCTB claim. My understanding is that I haven't yet met the residency obligation, so therefore my worldwide income stands exempted from being taxed. Am I right !

Hasni,
You are wrong. They ask the current income so that they can base this to sent your benefits for the current year. The next year benefits will be based on your / spouse salary in the current year.
They have no means of checking your previous overseas income. So you can write what you wish. You will be having a lot of expenses in Canada and you are new. So you will need all the money that you can get. For the locals it is easy to earn money. They were born here and have lot of local help and networking help. As a new immigrant, you are left high and low by the Govt. of Canada. Soon (in 3-6 months time) you will realize that.

All the best.

You are welcome.
One more piece of advice to you.
Save as much money you can in Canada. That is the key. My mistake that I did when I landed in 2002 with USD 12,000 was thinking that I should spend lavishly.
Save each $. But donot save on fast internet connection, phone / cellphone and TV. Always browse and learn.
Let me tell you what free things you can get in Canada :
1. Free groceries (from food banks)
2. Breakfast / lunch / dinner for free (at soup kitchens).
3. Free library (to read, get CD's , Dvd's etc..)
4. Free consultation at clinics and free treatment at hospitals (after 3 months)
5. Get a TTC pass for family or get a car (as per your wish).
6. Visit local MPP/MP and ask him if his office gives you settlement help.
7. Some schools offer free breakfast (check it out). Talk to the principal of the school. Find out the services offered free there for your kids and use them.
8. Free English speaking courses (at settlement centres / ESL/ YMCA's) for your wife- if needed.
9. Visit chinese stores for cheap rate but good quality veggies / meat.
10. Visit IKEA for cheap breakfast.
11. All the attractions have one 1/2 day entry free (like thursday 2-6 pm). Google, find out and use it.

All the best.
