The services of Food Banks and Soup Kitchens are basically for those people who are broken, have no money/resources, without employment and have nothing to eat. Instead of such people start begging on streets, the government offers social assistance programs (welfare assistance) and some organizations (like Salvation Army) run similar programs like Food Bank and Soup Kitchens.

Now it is up to your moral judgment whether you want to use (or abuse) those services if you are in good financial state. Think the long term impact/impression you are going to have on your children. It is just like stealing food from people in need or you can say stealing from beggar’s pot. Think twice before using such services.

Dear friends, Regarding CCTB (child benefits), the form asks for previous one year and two year income from the day we became permanent resident. Now this form shall be filled and applied by my wife as she would be the main applicant. She has never been to any job hence no previous income, but being her spouse I will have to put my income as the form asks for main applicant and spouse's income. Obviously I need to put my income here but my question is, can we put any amount, or it should not be above a certain benchmark or we should put our genuine income. Secondly, income put here may effect the benefit amount that we shall be getting or it's just a formality, pls suggest. Thanks

First thing first, the CCTB benefit amount will be impacted when you declare your previous year income. This is no formality.

Personal experience - I declared my previous year income , nice and fine in dollars and got min benefit (around 100+34$ / PM) and paid taxes also on world income and when I watched around what people do when they land as well as what tax consultants told me..later and what govt does to stop it, I was not happy that I declared it because as a new immigrant (till you get a job) CCTB is minimum support an immigrant gets. Being truthful is something which is highly subjective. A new immigrant who actually needs support from everywhere is mooched by insurance companies ( first time driver, high insurance) and banks and govt does nothing to save us.
As a new truthful immigrant I did forgo the full CCTB benefits while many other enjoyed being not so truthful and then was made to pay almost 500$ every month for 2 years, job no job, on my car insurance while others got same service in 150$ a piece , signed expensive contracts (more expensive than well established natives) to get accommodation (2 months rent), telephones and above all No bank was ready to hold your hand to give a credit card for first six months, no mortgage for good one year and no car loan.
So be mindful of what you forgo, just because you wanted to be truthful. The services which govt provide ( resume making, language skill development, library, soup kitchens etc ) are meaningless in front of unfair monetary hardships which an immigrant endures. But do not worry, the time flies , so does hardships.
Decision is yours to make !

San, I appreciate your truthfulness.i guess there are very few of your kind. Really inspired.

ps, can anyone pls tell that how long does it take for a new immigrant to start receiving CCTB and GST/HST after applying. Like I applies in mid of Aug '2014 and haven't received any yet.

When I landed in 2002, there was not even a single booth in the airport to help immigrants. Govt. of Canada thinks that we can survive on our own from day 1. this is your change to get back at them.

Appeal to GG and other moderators

I think there is a limit to accepting such behaviour from a member who keeps on harping constantly how to cheat Canada/Govt. It directly means, he tells new immigrants and others how to cheat people like you and me who go by the rules, pay taxes on actual income (whether low or high) and lead a worry free (from legal point of view) life.

Personally I feel, it is people like these who help in raising OUR cost of living thru taxes and other means and he is trying to bring in practices of India, one of the main reasons why we decided to leave that place and settle here.

And why oh why tell a new immigrant to start cheating the government even before he/she has experienced anything bad. Would it be right for me to say that one should be beware of all Tamilians because they cheat the government and steal food from the needy??? Not at all.

And the final rule - why do you feel you want to live in Canada if you think the govt and its people are here to cheat you and making your life difficult???..........Simple thing to do - do not come here. You don't want to come here only because you want to cheat the govt who you think will cheat you once you land here. What sick logic!

That being the case, can GG and other moderators please warn TK from writing such posts (relating experiences is different from advising to cheat) or ban him? I am concerned about this because I have personally been one of the few guys who supported this site in its infancy and helped bring it to a position where it is today, and united people outside of the web-site - in person.

Chandresh,
Not sure if you are looking at your own previous posts and knowing that you too once lied.
Everything that is open to cheat is already known to many desi's. How do you think that we have so many refugee's living in Canada when many refugees enter Canada by crook.
As I have said before, let Canada make its rules more stronger. If they want you to declare the world wide income, then let them ask proof of it instead of asking one just to state it.

I fully agree, being a new immigrant I was totally surprised to know that world wide income does impact your benefits yet one can simply declare whatever he likes as no proofs are required. CIC seems pretty lax here :(

yes. CIC is pretty lax here.
One more thing to ponder about. Immigration Canada, is alright about your education qualification for you to migrate to Canada as a professional eg. Architect, Doctor, Nurse, SOftware engineer, Engineer.
However once you land in Canada, you find that your qualification (which Canada recogonized for you to migrate) is NOT recogonized by the country for you to get a job eg. Doctor, Nurse, Doctor etc.. (Software is recogonized). For this you have to go through hoops and loops. Is this not cheating by the Canadian Government?
What does Chandresh have to say about this? Agree the 2 wrongs does not make a right but then we are poor people, having immigrated to canada with all our life savings and ready to take up a respectable job. But once we come here, donot say that we have to start with labor jobs to earn money.
Atleast now, with the high internet penetration, people know this before hand. When I immigrated in 2002 (applied in 1998), all I saw was that Canada will need to fill in 1 million jobs due to retirement in 2005. Now we are in 2014 and we know the truth. Even the great recession came in 2007/08.
