To start with you should upload your resume to Monster and Workopolis immediately with your current location as Toronto. And check these websites frequently, you will know what changes you need in the resume.

Recruiter also go to these sites to get relevant resume. sooner or later u ll get email from them.

It doesn't hurt to start early.. atleast u ll have enough experience of what not to do.

New Immigrant :
One Geetha Kannah was there but she is no longer visiting CD.
If you want, I can send you some Typical Canadian resumes. PM me your email address or call me.
If you want to send me your resume (with personal details deleted) I can go through both your resumes and advise you better.

Some people get a voip number which is a north american number and put in on their resume. Since your job is supposed to be entry level or mid level jobs, I doubt if any recruiter will call you based on your workopolis / monster uploading of resume. Not meant to insult or scare you but only reality.
Try not to contact employers direcly, unless you can land in Canada within 15 days or so. Otherwise, they will blacklist your resume for a period of 6 months. Recruiters donot mind. If you have a specific skill, they will come back to you.

Hope you would have heard of free settlement agencies like Gabriel catholic ./ career edge who will teach you for 1 month and then give you 3 months of unpaid voluntary posting. After 3 month,s, you will likely to be hired by the same company that you worked it. This is one of the positive points of Canada. However there is a waiting list and you may have to wait for a few months to get listed.

New Immigrant :
In the past, I have applied to every job in Workopolis, Monster and Jobbank.ca and did not even receive one call for interview.

Without Canadian experience, recruiters will not call you. So you will have to get or fake Canadian experience. I landed in 2002 and once in 2009, I was very upset that I was not getting any interview call. I already havd 7 years of professional experience in Canada but my degree was from India. So I stated that my diploma was from cenntenial college (Toronto). Immediately I got 3 interviews. One in Thunder bay wanted me to fax my diploma which I could not. The next job was in Kitchener and I joined. They gave a Canadian born and educated girld $ 14 an hour while I got $ 16 an hour.

If you need odd jobs (like lifting things in a factory), contact a recruiter like apple one, Manpower etc.. and they will give you simple test and if they have jobs, they will send you to one. Salary will be minimum wage and 99 % of the jobs will require heavey heavy lifting . Tell them that you will take only light jobs and if god's will is upon you, you may get it.

the best option as I see is to join for volunteer experience (costi, Gabriel, career edge). You may waste 6 months but at the end, I think you may be at a solid footing.

1. Don't live in Scarborough its a bad area. Etobicoke - North Etobicoke is a BAD area. But South Etobicoke is good.

Live on the border of Mississauga & Toronto in South Etobicoke ..so you have access to BOTH Mississauga Transit and Toronto Transit ( TTC ) .

So anything close to Islington Station or Kipling Station will be preferable. So in one ticket or one pass you can go to Toronto using TTC , or in one Ticket or one pass you can go to Mississauga using Mississauga Transit. Paying 2 fares for 2 different transits is TOO expensive. You ALSO have access to GO transit at KIPLING station.

You can easily get a 1 Bed Room apartment all inclusive for $ 1,000 - $ 1,200 in this area.

DO NOT live in a basement its a horrible lifestyle & you will only end up saving $ 200 - $ 300 per month as opposed to an apartment. You will have an inferiority complex living there..and its very cramped , dark & gloomy in winter. You will be ashamed to call your friends over there..will slowly start avoiding people & will socially isolate yourself out of the fear that people are judging you. You will also have less freedom living in someone's basement..there will be lot of arguments over petty things with the landlord.

2. Yeah your kid will get admission in September too ..its no big deal.

3. It will take some time for you to get jobs in your respective fields, as wherver you go they will ask for Canadian experience or Cad. education. So you might have to get a slightly lower job initially & then work your way up . Initially take anything to get into the Cad workforce/culture..but DON'T get stuck doing a survival job, keep on upgrading yourself through education & keep on applying for jobs in your field..DON'T give up.

Even with lower jobs & minimum wage jobs ..you can make $ 2,000 / month per person ..so $ 4,000 / month for a couple in GTA ..not your final goal , but a start...some people get stuck there, DON'T make that mistake..do it initially if you want, but them move on .

4. Lot of scams on Kijiji , Craigslist , Ebay etc . So look for apartments with professional apt. bldgs at places below.

http://www.rentersguide.ca/

http://www.rentseeker.ca/

5. Some of the monthly benefits your kid can get depending on his age & your family income is below. Also you can get a Quarterly HST credit and monthly OTB ( Ontario Trillium Benefit ) ..depending on your family income.

A. Universal child care benefit:

All families, regardless of income, are eligible to receive $100 each month per child under six. As of Jan. 1, 2015, UCCB payments to children under six will increase to $160 a month. There will also be a new benefit of $60 a month for children age six to 17, also effective Jan. 1, 2015. But the enhanced benefits won't be paid until July 2015, so parents will get a retroactive payment then. Because of the enhancements to the UCCB, the child tax credit will be eliminated as of the 2015 tax year. Note that the Canada child tax benefit (see below) has not changed. Apply using the Canada child benefits application.

B. Canada child tax benefit:

The eligibility and amount of this tax-free monthly benefit for each child under 18 is determined by family net income, province of residence and number of children. If you file late, payment may be temporarily put on hold as the amount is based on income reported on your annual tax returns. The child tax credit is indexed to inflation and new rates take effect July 1 of each year.

C.National child benefit supplement:

This is a federal supplement that tops up the Canada child tax benefit for low-income families with children under 18. Families get a monthly payment of $186.75 for the first child; $165.17 for the second child; and $157.16 for the third child. The supplement is reduced if the family's net income is more than $25,584 and could affect social assistance benefits since many provinces and territories treat it as income.

Some of the tax benefits parents can get below.

Tax time 2015:

Tax benefits for parents can add up to big savings

http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/taxes/tax-time-2015-tax-benefits-for-parents-can-add-up-to-big-savings-1.2960565

A. Also google OTB - Ontario Trillium Benefit which is a monthly benefit.

B. And HST quarterly credit , you get that every 3 months.

Most of the above are for low to moderate income families..you will be that in first few yrs in Canada in most cases.

Why are you coming to Canada so soon ?

You could have waited till your kid was bigger & then come here only for his University/College education .

Most people from Gulf only come here for the further higher education of their kids & for Canadian Passport & Citizenship.
In the meantime they save money in Gulf & invest in India in property or stocks or something.

University/College education is NOT that good in gulf ..but schools are pretty good upto Grade 12.

Plan B can be to somehow survive for 3-4 yrs in Canada doing low level jobs , take Canadian Citizenship & Passport & then go back to Gulf ..where you have a job in your field & the salary/lifestyle you want.

Then when your kid is 18-19 send him back to Canada for University education, so he doesn't pay exhorbitant international student fees but local resident lower fees as he is already a CAD citizen :)

Canada has that 'it' factor, regardless of the struggles. I told my cousin exactly that, before he wanted to immigrate with his whole family. In order to impress upon the family, friends, and relatives back home they all landed (couple and kids) altogether. They are not doing good professionally and working in stores for the past 1 year.

To make matters worse, his brother in law is getting married next year in January and now they have to spend close to $12k visiting back home while still struggling to make ends meet here. Whatever they have earned in 2 years will be gone in showing off their 'Canadian returned' tag to their families.

So, I simply stopped advising people. now. Do whatever your heart says. Come, land up, and see with your own eyes. At the end of it people do whatever they have to. However, it's good that they are getting good picture before they land. At least they are prepared in advance, which was even hard before the Internet era.
