Intent is simple. Allow NRI/OCI to convert rupees abroad since money abroad is not black money & terrorist linked.

There isn't much point in debating with each other.
We are all affected by this non sense.
This could have handled in a much simpler less painful way if GOI wanted but they made their capabilities pretty clear when they screwed up PIO card holders.
There is total panic among NRI population in gulf. Many of them are poor or locked by the system (employers) and can't visit India in next 6 weeks.
If Modi cared for NRI folks he sure would have ensured that proper arrangements were in place in India and abroad.
But we all can see what is going on india

None of the Indian banks in Canada are allowed to take rupees to put this into your NRO account. They have to follow Bank of Canada guidelines.
As stated earlier, Modi can't expect folks to spend $2000+, to save $500 (rs 25,000).
A lot of modi bhakts are annoyed, and in the process not reading the thread properly (getting worked up).
Wish you a pleasant day also.
To summarize,
1) Intent is simple. Allow NRI/OCI to convert rupees abroad since money abroad is not black money & terrorist linked.
2) don't care about RaGa, Soniya, AK etc.
3) Get PMO & Embassy to read CD. They will understand how to rework public policy. (okay just kidding !!).

So now we have 75107 members at CD and how many people are complaining except couple of you guys??????

As mentioned earliest transfer your funds through NRO account within legal limit but if you have more than 10 lac Rs in cash in Canada than all the best....
Good luck for this and keep continue to posing on CD to increase your post counts...
I am resting my case here and enjoy your day.....
Hello everybody,
I have come back to the site after a long time but I am amazed with the vitriolic flavor of sguk against Modi. Is it because you are an affected person in Gujarat and mistakenly attributing it to Modi.Isn't it a fact that there have been no riot in Gujarat since he became CM otherwise we used to see riots every year. Have you ever seen a government and its group of top ministers working the way all our present ministers are working.
My understanding is that the NRIs are slightly more understanding of the economic factors compared to regular Indians and in light of that, I would say that what Modi has done is phenomenal. The world bank has acknowledged it and let us say that if you are carrying a big sum in cash the way it is being talked about in the messages here then it is this money which Modi wants to root out.
So relax and enjoy the good days for India. Jai Hind!

Looks like GOI has decided to tell nri junta to either visit India in next 40 days or forget about their Indian currency notes of 500 and 1000

Basically too bad so sad
I think we have to be a little patient and let them workout modalities for exchange process for all residents outside India. Clearly since you are not visiting India until March 31 next year, you don't need the cash right away. Counting days and unnecessarily panicking is not going to help anyone.
Imagine, these steps were taken even in the past, but without the kind of alternate options like the present - what must have been the hardships our parents and grandparents faced.
$500 in Indian currency is not a crisis for us at present compared to the hardships being faced by our brothers and sisters in India. I am sure, once they have settled down, the exchange process for residents outside India will be introduced. In the meantime it is good idea to email them or post messages on the PM's social media handles. They have been actively responding on the social media.
If anyone has any ideas how this could have been better implemented without compromising the secrecy for desired impact should also voice your suggestions on all the above contact platforms. It might help them plan the next action better.
