Hi, we have received our Canadian Immigration papers and are looking to move to Canada within the next month or two.
We are looking at Winnipeg, MB as our destination for three reasons:
1. Lower cost of living compared to ON,
2. Medical coverage from Day one (no waiting period for 3 months like ON) and
3. We are closer to Winnipeg than to Windsor.
We are finding a ton of information on Toronto, and Vancouver and lesser info on Montreal and Calgary, but I am not finding any resources or websites for info on Winnipeg. I have looked at canadiandesi.com, relocatecanada.com, canadatotwincities.com and canada.com/winnipeg.
Please let me know of any Indian/ Immigrant communities in or around Winnipeg, also any info on the job market for Indian IT professionals, and also good locations to live community and school district-wise.
Please help. If you would like to communicate offline, please email relocateca2005 @ yahoo.com.
Hello Canadian Dream,
I have been and still am researching a few cities in Ontario and elsewhere as potential destinations. In my personal opinion cities other than Toronto might offer better opportunities to newcomers. This would be especially true for people who have no relations/contacts and need 'value for money' i.e. the funds you bring along takes you a long way than it would in T.O. My dad always tells me 'Sab bhoomi gopal ki'. In this context I have taken it upon myself to make some suggestions as no one has replied to your post.
All the same there is nothing like having a desi in these 2nd or 3rd Tier cities as they are known who can throw better light on the subject.
The following are some links I have come across and which might be of interest to you:
Official Winnipeg tourism and economic development website
http://www.tourism.winnipeg.mb.ca/
City of Winnipeg website
http://www.winnipeg.ca/interhom/
Winnipeg Airports Authority (check out in/out connecting flights)
http://www.waa.ca/" rel="nofollow">LINK
Winnipeg's daily newspaper (look up employment etc classifieds)
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/" rel="nofollow">LINK
Winnipeg city transportation / transit information. Useful if you have no personal transport and need to depend on public transport to get around:
http://www.winnipegtransit.com/" rel="nofollow">LINK
Winnipeg & Manitoba Schools/Education website (you wanted some info on schooling ):
http://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/index.html
Hope this helps.

Hi 1Gujju, Thanks for the web pointers. I agree wholeheartedly with you reg value for money destinations; in fact your reasoning outlines the exact reasons why we decided to move to Wpg. We dont have any friends/ relatives/ acquaintances in Canada and without job, we need to have the money we bring in go a long way - hence the destination. I am open to relocating anywhere within Canada once I land a suitable job, until then I would rather cool my heels (literally and figuratively) in Wpg than Toronto. AND yes, I would definitely like to hear from any desis in/around the Wpg area.

By the way, I consider myself a parttime Gujju since I graduated from MS University Baroda and I consider that among the best years of my life. So thank you for helping out a fellow (albeit parttime) Gujju.
Contact Cdesi member Adrin, I believe he's in Winnipeg.
You can locate any post by him using Search in Charcha and send him an email or a personal message.

All the very best to you.
