Proximity to college is not the only thing to look at. You got to see that grocery store, shopping malls, work place etc. are also nearby. In extreme winter, first one being really painful one, the decision of residence makes a great difference. I have travelled by publictransit many times... for two years. its site is http://www.winnipegtransit.com" rel="nofollow">LINK
Public transit is safe, the ticket costs $2 for a two-hour travel window. You may like to buy weekly or monthly pass to avoid all the ticket hassles. And If you like running or cycling, those are other options during summer... I am not joking.

And blink_guy, I am being cautious in writing just to avoid painting a very very rosy picture of Winnipeg/Canada. Every place has its own share of problems... if one manages to stay here for even one year, then they develop a bonding. Overall, I prefer Winnipeg, because it is my city.

Mods and other readers: First I thought of writing all this in PM/E-mail to blink_guy, but then I am writing all this here, so that any other reader may benefit from this information.

Hey,
Thanks for the reply. I understand every city has its pros and cons. I've been living in Mumbai for almost over 20 years now ( born here). To be honest, I hate the roads, the traffic, the crime rate ( though it has reduced over past few years), the water logging during the rains, the filth and the dirt, the slums but hell, all this hate combined can never come close to the love I have for this city. I understand Winnipeg and Canada has its pros and cons and it's only fair on my part to accept it as it is, which I'm ready to do. I'm not going to whine about the winter cause if I wanted to go somewhere warmer I should have gone to Australia, I'm not going to whine about the crime rate cause..oh what the hell..it's North America, if I want a crime free society I might as well move to Antartica. So I'm just saying, I'm ready to accept Winnipeg just as it is. Okay maybe I'll complain a little but then, like you said..the city will grow on me EH? :D
