KMukherjee,
The story of Immigrating engineers in canada is a mixed bag at best. Some could get a break with or without canadian certifications and many keep waiting even after upgrades.
But upgrading early helps a lot in jobsearch. Do not come with very high expectations , but dont let your dreams die down. There are lots of opportunities one just has to keep trying constantly for a break.
I am a mechanical engineer aswell and ended up in construction . Be prepared to change fields.
A friend who is a civil engineer came 2 yrs back with family, struggled for a yr but did not get any break so they wound up everything and went back to india last yr. He and his wife got jobs back in india within a month of returning and they startated their lives all over again in india.
We all thought that after the bad experience and lesson learned here he'd never return . To my surprise he came back last month, this time alone ....and detrmined to slog it out till he gets a break. For now he is trying and trying hard ...but the determination he has this time round , i feel it is just a matter of time that he will get his break.
He is doing transition jobs for expenses but is not giving up. I hope he gets his break soon. Same applies to all those out their waiting for their breaks,
Good luck.

What can be imagined, can be achieved.
Immigratio to this country is like Dilli ka laddoo...jo khaayaa uska bhee pate dard kiya...jo nahin khaaya uska bhee pate dard kiya
Or maybe it is Mumbai ka laddo...whatever..the thing is ki pate dard karega ...especially ek baar yehan ka hawaa lag gaya to... aur jub pate dard karna hi hai to yehan aa ke hi karey.. ??
