hi there,
My name is Suchitra
I would like get your help in this issue, me and my husband got PR card, and planning to land in 2 months time. I was doing research on the net about canada , the cost of living and that stuff, and i saw a forum about immigrants in Canada , they were talking very badly about the situation there and how some of them returned back home after they lost their savings without finding any job, or if they found one it won't be suitable to their level of education, experiences and skills, and how they regret that they moved to Canada after they were living in better conditions in their home country. Is the Govt. is aware of the plight of hundreds of thousands of immigrants and if so what action is being taken? As these people have done everything to get this Canadian experience and assessed their degrees and even some of them joined universities to get Canadian certificates. I would like really to know the truth , 'cause this forum didn't say any good word about living and migrating to Canada. and actually we want immigrate there seeking a peaceful life for us and our kids, with good life conditions. any advice will be appreciated. Really in need for that advice. i work in the dot net fields and my husband work in the accounting field. we are wokring in Dubai. i make US$3000.00 & my husband makes US$2500.00 per month. There is no tax here as of now. i am 30 years of age and my husband is 35. Please tell me if the move is worth in the long term. Also please tell me if Calgary is better than Toronto to get job. i have heard that there are lot of immigrants in Toronto. but some people say toronto is overcrowded. so it is difficult to get a job in toronto.
i read lot of horror stories in the below mentioned web sites.
i asked some people who already immigrated in 2004, they said DONT COME,
CANADA IS GRAVEYARD OF DREAMS, SO MANY LIVES RUINED, SO MUCH MONEY WASTED, ETC.ETC
thanks in advance
Suchi
You opened up a Pandora's box.
IT is strong here and likely the only field in which you can easily find a job. The job typically pays 50-65K per annum (Salary is taxable). You may get a job in 3-6 months after coming here.
Regarding your husband, if he is a CA then he may have to do some courses and may land in an entry level job, Subsequent progress depends on luck and his smartness.
Since you donot have children (i assume so), You maynot be gaining anything by coming here in the near future.
Your combined salary of USD 5500/ month is very good. If i were you , I would not come to Canada (knowing first hand the situation).
It is your call.
Please read all the posts in Cd (might take you 2 or 3 months to read them at your leisure) and then take a decision. You still have age on your side (Advising you to stay put, where you are).

Hi,
Thank you very much for the quick reply.
My husband is Master of Commerce (M.Com) from India.
He has been working in Dubai for 9 years.
We are on work visa. if something happens to visa, or if there is any problem with employer, we may have to go back to india, which dont like.
That is why we applied for Canadian PR. Several people went from middle east. Many people stayed there in canada. some people managed to get good jobs. some people came back to dubai having lost their hard earned money and job. some smart people went to USA after getting passport.
Some pakistani people told me it is next to impossible get a job in canada.
i dont know if they had problem due to their (muslim) religious background.
We can move only if there is a chance that my husband can also get a job.
can you please tell me if there are lot of entry level jobs in accounting field.
like staff accountant, accounts clerk, receivable clerk, payable clerk. He is ready to start from entry level.
I checked in workopolis and monster. there are lot of advt. there for accountants. i dont know if they are bogus advt.
Also can you tell me for him Toronto is better or Calgary. Assume that he comes down first. then find out a job and then i join him.
I appreciate your reply
Thank you very much
Suchi
Suchi,
Taking a slightly pessimistice view, I doubt if your husband (with M.com) can get more than $10- $ 12 an hour (if at all he gets a job). Remeber that even many CA's are finding it difficult to get a job. I am not saying that it is not possible, but only that it is not probable. A general factory employee , doing weight lifting in factories earn $15-$18 an hour (after 2 or 3 years experience).
Dot Net is doing quite well here and you may get a good job but even then it may be after a waiting period.. A friend that i knew in Dot Net (she worked in Satyam and got married and came here) was able to find a job only after 1 year after coming here and her salary is 50K. If at all you decide to come here, You should come first, get a job/ settle down and then your husband should come.
I am not the right person to tell you if Toronto or Calgary is best and hence leave it to other CD members.
Once you come here, Your husband will be treated as a fresh graduate and his 9 years in Dubai will generally not be recogonised by any employer unless your husband has a special skill which matches with the skill required by a cdn. employer and this chance is just 1% or less.
The mistake that people do from the ME (incl myself) is that we think that we will get a job which will take advantage of our experience and skills gained in the ME (even probably working in an American co. in the ME) and which is not at all the case (I am speaking for jobs outside IT field). Most of tthe people are made to start from scratch.
I would love to see CD's proving me false.
Please go through the Charcha in detail. Even last week there was an enquiry from a couple as to if they should come here (parents working in Kuwait, One is an Accountant and the other is an office exec., Daughter studying in Canada. Even the Daughter is against the parents leaving their well paid job in Kuwait and coming and searching for work in Canada). I think the majority of discussions were largely tilted that they should not come here. It may not be directly applicable to you as those couple were in the late 40's but could generally apply to you.
