1. Learn to let go things. Do not argue even if you are right. There is a pre conceived notion among majority of the locals that outsiders (immigrants) don’t know much. Even if you are correct, learn how to make your point diplomatically and keep quiet. Some desis try their best to harp on and end up on the wrong side of the peers. Sooner than later your peers will see your point and agree with you.

2. Do not let your spouse interfere in your job. Making some off the mark comments in the company Christmas party is one example (“my wife/hubby can fire him/her anytime”). No one will tolerate that nonsense. This may ruin your career.

3. When you are in a meeting and drinking coffee, don’t sip loudly. I have come across people doing that and it is very embarrassing. When you cough, keep your hand as a barrier or turn away from others.

4. Most of the desi born speak with the accent including me. Talk slow and crisp. If others don’t understand what you are talking, that’s not a good sign.

5. Don’t forget that we are competing with locals and we are foreigners. Not only we need to work hard, we need to be smarter with some soft skills.

My Ottawa Bandhu :D
You are rigght abt the sipping and coughing aspect. However I will differ with you abt "pointing out the mistakes"... Unless you point out the mistakes clearly and effectively ( otherwise known as politely but firmly) you will be kicked around like a football. Of 'cos you have to use ur tact to determine when to be polite, when to be firm and when to be both.

Regarding accent..I dont think that has any effect unless you are going for Managerial level jobs..If someone is looking for Tim Horton's and such jobs..accent has no effect...If someone is looking for a Teachers job..again it has not effect (with an occassional bad review from students :D)....

Oh really?!

Try going to a local school class (especially in a school where majority is of whites) and try to speak the word grass in Indian accent. I bet 80% of the students will not understand what you are speaking about . You will have to repeat the word, and in your own accent, speak it as gress!

Well if the person has a "hopeless" accent then it cant be helped. I meant an accent of a person who was educated in India in the ICSE borad :) I forgot that there are other ISKOOL boards in India also *pardon* :D

I had infact given example of my wife - who happens to have been educated in so called 'convent' schools of India, with a governess at home during childhood, and who passed out as Gold Medalist at University for her Masters and who was not only one of the 75 students selected out of 6000 applicants, but also got a comment from the interviewers that they were surprised and saddened by the fact that she out of all the people had to go for a mandatory English test of York University, just because she happened to be a foreign graduate!!!

Yes my childhood was spent in the 'iskools' that you mentioned, but she - she was from the 'convent'. And this happened with her in one of her practicum (not practical mind you) sessions during her B Ed course!

Sometimes I wonder how people can assume things!

And in your opinion, ICSE students pronounce Board as 'borad' - so the ones from 'iskools' are really much hopeless!

So where were you from? hopeless, or borad or above that (like UWC)?
