I am landing in Toronto by road on Jan 10th. I plan to take minimum luggage right now and will move my luggage after couple of months using movers. My question here is as i'm preparing the list of goods to follow, since my luggage is not packed, i am listing all items by category eg. Furniture, Kitchen, etc. along with their dollar value. I cannot mention the items by box. I hope this is the right way. Can someone please confirm.

Thanks a bunch !!

I don't think they are particularly strict about the way you list the items, as long as you list them clearly and each item is uniquely identifiable.
For example, all electronic items should have the make/model/product code, value, etc.
Furniture should also have the make, model, weight, value listed.

What I did was a combination of box listing and individual listing - I listed the bigger and more valuable items individually and the odds and ends as boxes, like 2 boxes of book, 2 boxes clothes, and so on and a value for each box.

Not that I know of.
You may have some issues if you are importing a new and expensive car.
For example if you bought a Porsche just before moving to Canada and are trying to import it.

Regular personal items like electronics, clothes, books, etc. don't have any limits.
Jewellery and expensive artwork should contain a valuation statement and listed separately.

Hi Pratick,

You have mentioned "BOX", now can you throw some light on this?, because recently one of my friends was asked to purchase bags at the mumbai airport and he had to empty all the Brown boxes and put the stuff in the bags.

you have mentioned "2 boxes of books, 2 books of clothes etc... It means did you make this boxes and put it in side the BAGs? Is that so? PLease clarify.

Regards,

VJ

My post was in response to the member 'waiting', who said he is landing by road, probably from the USA.
The concept of packing several boxes of items applies in this case.

When landing by air from another country like India you really cannot carry several boxes because the airlines won't allow it.
Firstly there are weight limits, and secondly there are limits on the number of items, which is probably why the airlines made your friend buy bags and transfer the contents.

If you are landing from India, you have two options - either ship all your stuff separately in boxes, or if you are bringing them with you as luggage, then simply list the items individually.
You can say something like --
Books - 12. Value $200
Shirts - 10. Value $100
Kitchen appliances - 10. Value $300
and so on.

I landed by road and found that they are not very strict about personal items - they didn't even look at the items and simply stamped the goods list.
As long as you are not carrying some very expensive items like artwork or precious jewellery valued in several thousands of dollars, there is no need to worry.
If you are, then get those items valued separately and carry the valuation statement with you.

Hope this helps.

Dear Pratick,

Thank you very much. These are very vital data for me. This would surely help me to prepare the final list.

One last thing, I have only one format for this (.pdf), so I have to get two printouts for "GOODS WITH US" and "GOODS TO FOLLOW" right?

Regards,

VJ..
