Hi everyone,
I am planning to move to Vancouver in the next one year. I am presently in the US in Florida. I am working as research engineer in a university in Florida . I have my mastes in electrical engineering, but since getting green card in the US is becoming extremely tough I am looking at the option of moving to Canada. I would like to pursue my MBA in UBC. I have the following questions.

Does the government give financial aid or study loans for PR's
Will it be possible to get atleast a part-time job for my living expenses
What are the possibilities of getting a job after my MBA

You suggestions and responses are appreciated

Hi Gan123_s,

Nice to know that you have also planned migrating to Canada.

As far as I know PRs are eligible to apply for grants and I'm sure about the fact that there are loans too.

Until now, all that I have heard about how easily one can find the job has been a matter of great debate. You can try and check yourself, the plethora of chains of posts by anxious desis debating about the whole issue. A lot of them say, Canada is useless and has no jobs the loyal ones disagree. This may seem quite simple. But I guess it's the notion: a lot of desis try to compare USA's flexibility to Canada's. But what we don't think is that Canada is not that flexible, may a 10% of what USA has to offer. When we have a situation like this I think it will be an onus on our part to accept and change or just not apply for PR. Another way could be to gain entry to Canada, take citizenship or find an employer in US who can vouch for applying for a green card for you.

My sincere advice to you would be to be open for change and not just be stuck in only a particular work function. As with regards to you, you are an engineer and you have had good experience I guess, this should come in handy specially in industries where management and engineering compliment each other well.

You will get jobs in Canada only if you have the right means to land in one. However, you might find wild differences in salaries but it will only come to you if you care to compare. And, my friend, if you seek comparisons there are none, because there is hardly any country in this planet that can guaruntee an immigrant a better substitute but America!

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. If I immigrate Canada to I would first like to go to school to get my MBA. I have following the discussion forums in this website and have come to understand that to find a job in Canada either one has to have Canadian experience or Canadian qualification. I am not sure whether US qualification and experience would be taken into consideration. Also any idea how much grants does the government give for education.

Thanks

US qualifications are very well recognized here. Getting a job after MBA should not be difficult depending on the school you choose. The best school here is Richard Ivy that is comparable to Harvard. The one at York in Toronto also has a very good reputation.
Student loans to PRs are available but only after a year.
What I have written is applicable for Ontario. I am not sure if it is the same for BC.

Thanks for your reply DiogenestheCynic. Is it possible to get part time job while as a student. How much can one make working 20 hours a week. When I was a student in the university in the US the pay for Research and Teaching assistants was between 15 an 17 dollars per hour. I am single and the above mentioned pay would cover my living and other expenses.

Yes, Teaching Asst jobs are available, but I guess that is possible only after you have done one semester. I am not sure about the wages, but I guess it must be at similar levels.
