Whatever be the shortcomings of Indian society, we have to fight against them. Even if we are in Canada, we will be Indians definitely. We can fight against these evils from here also. As such, untouchability in India is definitely less now.
I know of people who live in US/Canada/India & have taken dowry when they have married. It is one of the most deplorable practices.
Overall, I feel the family ties in India help an individual & that is why we see less instances of mental problems in India. It is also one of the reasons why Indians have been successful in various countries around the world. Here one has to depend on social support groups. In India too, many problems are on the increase.
One should try & accept the best of all cultures while trying to remove the bad things.
Thanks & rgds.
Rajan.

One of the main difference between American and Indian culture is the family relationship.....

Culture isn't static. It changes. It resides in people. I don't think its something you buy or build outside of people - that's something that the government wishes because it is a way to control culture. I'm not Indian but I think the Indian culture is very adaptive, it has survived colonialism and as it spreads around the world it changes. People don't have to have only one culture or participate in one culture. People can keep parts of their ancestral culture, other parts transform, other parts they pick up as they meet new people in new places.
A big problem among people of many different cultural backgrounds is a focus on maintaining some type of traditional culture as if culture must be frozen in time in order to be authentic. It is what people make it.

What we call Indian culture is basically culture of Sanathana Dharma adopted by people of all religions in the sub-continent. The invaders and others who visited our land on the other side of the river Indus seeing the flourishing society named it Hinduism
The culture basically requires parents, teachers, king, guests and elders to be treated on par with God. That we should pray for the happiness of not only human beings and also that of plants and all other living and non-living things. That we should respect the higher life energy of trees, rivers, mountains and other pancha bhoothas, which are important for sustenance of life in this planet.
That we have to practice whatever is handed down as good and dharma by our parents, elders, our own village or province and hand it over safely to the next generation.
Above all the religions of the sub-continent allow the individual freedom to decide and practice whatever is dharma in his or her own viewpoint. Even atheism was practiced as per Ramayana.
Whether America needs such a culture is for them to decide.

Some part of Indian Culture is being highlighted by Amir Khan in his recent TV showings... Be proud of it ! !
To me a better culture is to be a better human being and make your kids one too, respect your parents, and perform your duties truthfully towards your home and country.
Now, it doesn't matter whether this culture is American, Indian, Islamist, Hinduism, etc. Being from a particular religion, continent, country, or the community don't make one having a better culture and a good human being.
Everything else doesn't really matter. Cultural 'holier-than-thou' attitude must absolutely go.
