As a rule of thumb when you want to view a HD TV you use 2.5 times the distance in inches to the size of TV in inches, diagonally. So, approximating, a 40 inch screen will call for 8.5 feet gap. You can use the same guide lines safely for a 3D TV also.
I cannot buy a 14 foot TV as I do not have sufficient space in my house. So, Thanks.
