Try State Bank of India (Canada) http://www.sbicanada.com." rel="nofollow">LINK

If you want to find out the current exchange rate call them at 416-865-0414 and dial ext. 400. The automated message gives you the exchange rate for the day.

I do not think any Canadian bank or even SBI or ICICI will convert Canadian Dollars in to Indian Rupees (CASH ) to be used in Canada, but they can certainly issue a draft in Indian Rupees payable only on a bank in India.

If the rules have changed, then would some one update?

Thanks for all your replies. But, my friend is going to India for a vacation and he wants to carry close to 50,000 indian rupees with him. He doesnt want to change it at the airport, and was wondering is there a place in GTA where he can get cash for canadian dollers

Is travellers cheque in Indian rupees a good alternative?

Thanks again

I believe that legally no one can take this much amount in Cash in Indian Rupees from out side INDIA and you can not get legally any Indian Currency outside India excluding Nepal. He would have to change his money in India at either at the Airport or at some bank dealing in Forex.

If he can get Indian Rupess Travellers cheque from SBI (??) it would be a good alternative.

I don't think SBI issues INR TC's. You could however get :

US$ TC
CND TC
INR Bank draft (but you'd need a bank a/c in India)
or just carry US$ cash. Keep away from carrying CND cash.

The reason why I was suggesting SBI in the 1st place (see my earlier post), is 'cause their exchange rate is better then other banks when it comes to INR.
