Hello everybody this is a question i would like to ask from you all and I hope somebody will give me a reply and it would be really appreciated.
I just wanted to know if i can go to the US, eg across the border for shopping in Seattle and bellingham etc.. Im a Registered Immigrant/Permanent Resident.
Would I be eligible to travel to the US and come back?

That depends on your country of citizenship.
If you are from one of the US visa waiver countries like UK, Australia, Germany, etc. then you don't need a visa.

However, if you are from a non visa waiver country like India, Pakistan, etc. then you will need a US tourist/pleasure visa, i.e. a B-1/B-2 visa.

You need to apply for the visa at the nearest US consulate.

1. What exactly is your intention to go to US ?

2. If it is shopping only , there is not a huge advantage in shopping. ( with the Canadian dollar being 84.5 cents US )

3. Even if you just go for shopping, there are 2 cases

A. GOing to US, shopping , returning the same day ( you have to pay for gas, I-94 , get finger printed at the border and also have to pay taxes on most of your shopping upon re entering Canada, because you will not have stayed long enough to pay less tax upon entry into canada)

B. If you stay longer, the hotel and food costs in US will accumulate and the net cost of goods after you return to Canada will be either equal or more than thier value in Canada . Also you lose the freedom of return/exchange ( for which you have to take up the elaborate journey again )

There were days when people used to go across the border just to fill up the gas or walk across to buy some beer / cigarette etc . no more ....

there are a set of rules to get a visa and yet face another set of hurdles ( VIsa/ Passport / I-94 / Fingerprinting /waiting etc ) at the border and I feel that this exercise is not worth if it is only for shopping...

It is upto you to decide..

Does this mean that a PR need not go to the US embassy to get visa stamped incase he wants to go the the US for one or two days.

I might have to go to the US for a couple of days... attend a friend's get together.... my wife has a 10 yr US visa but I do not have US visa.

What are the chances of getting a visa for a Indian passport holder and a docotr who is here on a medical fellowship for 2 yrs? He was rejected US visa when he applied for it in India. he would like to visit family in US.
