Ask the other guy whether he is ready to pay you the whole cost. Even if he is ready to share the costs ask for insurance deductible or 50% of the cost, whichever suits you.

If you are feeling your guilt, then better not ask but he would not have given his phone # to you before leaving. Even if you have parket illiegally and not moving, he needs to watch where he is going.

Do you realize that this \"desi\" may be a member of CD and if he didn't know that you were parked illegally before, he sure knows it now :D

I spoke to the guy last evening. He told me that there is a Ontario law abt no fault case when there is a situation like this (backing up in a city parking lot). I haven't checked with my ins so far abt this.

The guy (witness) who saw all this (another south indian) is now trying to distance himself from the situation. I spoke to him last evening and he told me that he doesn't want to get involved in this.

Seems like he's trying to back out. I'm personally am not aware of any such rule. The only thing the insurance co. will do is probably take it as a 50-50.

I was in a similiar situation a few years ago, when I was the one backing-up. I told the guy get a quote and we'll settle. They came back with a ridiculous amount ('cause they went to the dealer). I declined and ask them to proceed with the insurance claim. In the meantime I called my insurance co. and twisted the story completely, and at the same time mentioned that my car was damaged but I will not be putting in a claim. Later the claims dept. of my insurance co. called to let me know the other party's claim, to which I asked them to refer to my complaint (on file with them). They just closed the case with no change to my premium.

I'm really upset to hear that this third entity does not want to get involved. I witnessed a similar situation myself last year and the dent was miniscule. (Barely visible!) I was speaking on behalf of this sardarji (as he was not speaking English), and the accident happened with some white dude who was parked illegally.

Since it was also public parking. I did the next best thing and called security for the building where the parking lot was. And then all 4 of us talked it over and decided to not get insurance/police involved at all.

So turns out that isn't such a great idea to get those two authorities involved unless it's a big accident. $1000 is a lot of money to pay all by yourself but at the same time, it can save you future headaches with insurance company. Just try to get the other party to dish out some cash and call a truce.

Also, someone suggested on this board that if it's something you can live with, that's cool until there comes a time when you can piggyback this dent with another issue. :D
