Well, I did get the energy rebate of $250 from the Canadian govt. as well since I qualify for the low-income families receiving the National Child Benefit supplement.

I rent a apartment so do not have to pay the heating bill separately.

Rgds.

This 400 $ is peanuts . It will just be enough for paying my heating bills this winter.

Free heating for one season does not excite you ;)

Hey! It's free money. If you are not happy about that, send your cheque over here to Ontario. :D

It is not free money. Alberta Govt managed to have suplus budget because it cut the number of teachers all these years and also it reduced spending in health care. That is why there is a wait list for many health facilities.

speaking of health care, there are cases of patients being made to sleep in hallways in hospitals in Calgary nowadays.

Also, co-ed hospital rooms (due to shortage of beds) have been started. While it is an exciting idea :D when you are well, it is uncomfortable especially for the females.

A few years back, one hospital was actually demolished by the Alberta govt. due to lack of funding & couple of others were closed down.

Ofcourse I am happy with the money.

Rgds.

At the expense of whom? Most patients that require hospitalization are seniors. I dont think its so great that everyone gets rebates..and the most vulnerable in society are the sacrifices for it.

disclaimer: I have lived in alberta afew years ago.

I dont know where you get your info from - there was a report out yesterday that said that AB has the second best healthcare in the country after BC - ofcourse there is still scope for improvement, but compared to the rest of the country it is in much better shape.

Also, the surplus was not a result of budgetary cutbacks - it was not a result of tightening the belts so to speak. The rebate is money distributed from an unbudgeted surplus. The government was projecting a budget surplus anyway and that budget surplus has been targeted towards regular growth areas for health care, education, etc. The unbudgeted surplus came about because of the runaway rise in oil & gas prices last year. Just about one third of the unbudgeted surplus is being distributed to the residents.

We had to wait 4 weeks for an ultrasoudf apointment and a MRI scan . My kids school did not receive funding for expansion so some kids have to study in a portable outside the school building. In minus 40 degc they have to shuttle between school and portable. Not to mention the class size is more then 20 kids for a teacher.
