Meghal,

You are saying only what you have experienced. Unfortunately the reality is very different. You are talking of a very stable 9-5 job, which everyone is not fortunate enough to get. Very few are blessed with what you have. You are lucky. My congratulations. At the same time, your arrogance speaks for itself.

For once I agree with TK. India is very different and nothing is wrong in what TK writes.

So who picks the garbage here. AFAIK, all the offices have a contract with cleaning services who does the services.

BS. Have you ever worked in retail job, Timmy's, etc. We have to do our own garbage. Period. I am not complaining about that. But the fact remains we have to do it. So what TK says is correct, but he should not complain about that. It is just a part of your duty and a perk of living in Canada!

And afterall, it won't hurt to have a little civic sense and maintain tidiness and cleanliness at your workplace

True. So, what's the point here?

So from where did the word "Chamcha originate??

"chamcha" originated from India. Did you not know that. Or having received the Canadian citizenship has given a dose of amnesia. And I know where the word " sycophant" originated.

In Canada we have unlimited coffee at any part of day. You can pour as much cream as you want

Do you work at Tim Horton's? May be not, but atleast that's only place I know of where we get free coffe while we work. So unfortunate of me.:(
Quote:

Is it any different here? Ultimately, it depends upon your boss. It hardly matters whether you are in Canada or overseas

For once you are right, or the politically correct statement is, I agree with you.
Quote:

Same here.
Canada: You know my life in Canada. It is exactly opposite to the points mentioned in India.

Too bad. You should start looking for a better job.

Again your arrogance speaks for itself. Show some empathy.

Iceberg,
Excellent response.
Though Meghal was not arrogant when he/she suggested that i look for another job. I do agree on that. I looked high and low for the first 3 years that i was here but for 1 year now i have been too busy with work to look for a job. I wake up at 8:00 am, leave the house at 8:30 am and come back at 9:00 to 9:30 pm , 7 days a week. And mind it , i am in a professional job which many of my clan did not get. Think of the plight of people in factories, Tim etc.. In Tim's a person working there has to clean toilets in shifts. And when i worked in a factory, i had to sweep my work place. In one factory, the wash room was more filthy than a Indian railway washroom.
I am not complaining. I am only highlighting the Canadian workplace.
In a office that i knew , a software engineer hired was asked to do his duties in the reception table and also work as a receptionist. That individual refused.
Things are not heaven here. Personally i have seen many highly placed individuals (incl. IT people) afraid of the boss. In india , who is afraid of the boss. Can anyone lay you off?
I remember my dad (a professional) getting into a fight with the driver for a legitimate cause. My dad tried hard to change him to another job but he failed.
Just my view points and feeling.
TK

A lot of respect in your workplace. I love India too but I still have few working years and I donot think I can work in India. I get total independence in my work. My boss listens to my views. He/She doesnot say, I am the boss, do as I say.

I also do what I like. I donot have to do certain things even though donot like but for the fear of what others will say.

I forgot to add a white Canadian assistant not to me personally, but for a pool of people. Since I work from home, I can ask her to send my mail recd at office to my home address. If I have any issues with expense reports. she resolves it. (Just kidding)

Love those...especially martinis on the expense report.

Also love it that I can work my own hours...as long I put in the required # of hrs a day and meet the deadlines. Not very difficult to do 80% of the time. On most days, I get home by 5.15 pm and have quite a bit of the daylight left in the summer.

I also quite like the do-it-yourself culture when it comes to home improvements. Its fun to learn new things as you go along.

Hi TK Saab,
I appreciate the fact that it was your concern for a prospective immigrant that made you post your experience in this particular discussion. Thank you for that. :) .

Since I am in India, I just wanted to let you know that the MNCs in India function much in the same way (not exactly though, thank God ! :) ) as I've read from some previous posts.

India is supposed to be shining, booming, whatever. But the kind of job security that has been mentioned, along with (the hint of) the idea that a person is expected to do nothing beyond his job only, is home by 5 pm, has time for family in the weekends --- all these things, I have rarely seen here, unless you count the working style of the government employees.

I may be wrong--- but most of my friends and relatives work in MNCs here, so I can only state what I've seen where their lives are concerned.

Along with India's growth, it seems to me, most work places are also adopting some of the (disliked part of the) work culture in the west.

I appreciate the fact that a lot of canadian desis have spoken about the negative sides of Canadian life just so that prospective immigrants do not go through the anguish and hardships that they have been through.

I feel it is my turn to do the same for those who would like to return to India --- Most of India is warm (I'm not speaking about the climate) and "Bindaas", has a very chilled out approach to life and is fantastic in myriad ways. But this country is changing very fast (not only positively) and I am concerned that when many of you return for good from Canada, you may find that India has not remained the same as when you left it. :(

I agree, its unfortunate for you. We have free coffee too. Theres also a cappuccino machine installed by the company. Discounted soft drinks @ .25 cents a pop too.

A games server that never goes down. :) is part of the perks.
