Somebody mentioned about the traffic. Yes, we do take it for granted in Canada. I am going to write about my experience on my 2004 visit to India.

Me, my husband and husband's uncle were travelling on Banglor's new wetern style highways. You drive at 80 to 100 kms an hour on these. Western style road dividers, barriers from communities to highway like on 401. I was sitting in the back admiring highways and how it seems like you are in wetrn world and then suddenly I saw a huge truck in opposite direction coming on straight towards our car. I screamed and his uncle said yes, I am watching and he changed the lane. was he not paying attention, it would have taken 2 minutes for all of us to be dead.

Apparently, the other side of the highway was (where the truck should be travelling) is busy witht he trucks paying their octori for enetring in Banglore so this trucker did not want to wait so he just decided he was going to travel on the other side for some time till he can change to his correct side.

With regards to working in Canada, I can really apply the principle of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

The first need is a physical one and is realised by the fact that you actually have a job that fulfills your most basic economic needs.

The second is the need for safety and security at work. Work policies, guidelines and laws are there to ensure we all have a safe environment in which to work. Whether it be physical or emotional. We feel comfortable and at peace (not freezing our butts off in winter, not fainting in the heat in summer, comfortable work spaces using ergonomics, health regulations, etc.) And emotionally (not putting up with bullies or sexual/verbal abuse or threats at work, etc.). Counselling offered to those who need it. Time off during bereavement without question.

The third need of social belonging is met through acceptance from colleagues, group membership, having an association with a successful team - this is how you build your social circle. There are many ways work can provide this, through teams days, corporate days and competitions, support groups, special days being celebrated like birthdays and anniversaries. Little things like this make working life pleasant and also help to alleviate stress.

The third need brings about the realisation of the fourth need which is to have self esteem. With the responsibilities of important work projects being given to you and when your intelligence is being recognised you can't help but feel good about yourself. Work offers educational services like online courses, subsidised fees on courses through recognised institutions, and continuous development and encouragement to better yourself.

All this and more is offered in our working environments and it's all for us to take advantage of. This is what I like about working and living in Canada. Not to mention an increase in salary (if your lucky!) after reviews :D

Lana some rules about Indian traffic laws. Keep these in mind next time and u won't have any problems :D Article 9 describes what u had to go through.

Rules-of-the-road - Indian style
Travelling in India is an almost hallucinatory potion of sound, spectacle
and experience. It is frequently heart-rending, sometimes hilarious,
mostly exhilarating, always unforgettable - and, when you are on the roads,
extremely dangerous.

Most Indian road users observe a version of the Highway Code based
on a Sanskrit text. These 10 rules of the Indian road are published
for the first time in English.

ARTICLE I
The assumption of immortality is required of all road users.

ARTICLE II
Indian traffic, like Indian society,is structured on a strict caste system.
The following precedence must be accorded at all times. In descending
order, give way to: cows, elephants, heavy trucks, buses, official cars,
camels, light trucks, buffalo, Jeeps, ox-carts, private cars, motorcycles,
scooters, auto-rickshaws, pigs, pedal rickshaws, goats, bicycles (goods-
carrying), handcarts, bicycles (passenger-carrying), dogs, pedestrians.

ARTICLE III
All wheeled vehicles shall be driven in accordance with the maxim:
to slow is to falter, to brake is to fail, to stop is defeat.
This is the Indian drivers' mantra.

ARTICLE IV
Long blasts (desperate) denote supplication, ie to oncoming truck,
"I am going too fast to stop, so unless you slow down we shall both die".
In extreme cases this may be accompanied by flashing of headlights (frantic).
Single blast (casual) means "I have seen someone out of India's 870 million
whom I recognise", "There is a bird in the road (which at this speed
could go through my windscreen)" or "I have not blown my horn for
several minutes."
Trucks and buses (IV,2,a): All horn signals have the same meaning,
viz, "I have an all-up weight of approximately 12.5 tons and have no
intention of stopping, even if I could."
This signal may be emphasised by the use of headlamps (insouciant).
Article IV remains subject to the provision of Order of Precedence
in Article II above

ARTICLE V
All manoeuvres, use of horn and evasive action shall be left until
the last possible moment.

ARTICLE VI
In the absence of seat belts (which there is), car occupants shall wear
garlands of marigolds. These should be kept fastened at all times.

ARTICLE VII
Rights of way: Traffic entering a road from the left has priority.
So has traffic from the right, and also traffic in the middle.
Lane discipline (VII,1): All Indian traffic at all times and irrespective
of direction of travel shall occupy the centre ofRoundabouts: India has no
round
abouts. Apparent traffic islands in the
middle of crossroads have no traffic management function. Any other
impression should be ignored.

ARTICLE IX
Overtaking is mandatory. Every moving vehicle is required to overtake
every other moving vehicle, irrespective of whether it has just
overtaken you.
Overtaking should only be undertaken in suitable conditions, such as in
the face of oncoming traffic, on blind bends, at junctions and in the
middle of villages/city centres. No more than two inches should be
allowed between your vehicle and the one you are passing - and one inch
in the case of bicycles or pedestrians.

ARTICLE X
Nirvana may be obtained through the head-on crash.

Joe Volpe for liberal leadership race? Never heard that before.

IMHO, there is no such thing as "nomination for future PM". The probable contenders for liberal party leadership election, which is in november are Michael Ignatieff, Bob Rae, Gerard Kennedy, and Scott Brison. :(

I was on another thread and it reminded me of a facility in Canada that my family LOVE to use

The Public Library System. Its a goldmine of books and every borough has/or shares a library. In montreal each person can borrow upto 10 books at a time on the card. Books range from fiction, self-improvement to gardening, finance etc. Almost everything one can imagine. Its all free(funded by taxpayers for the mst part).
My family loves books and we devote a lot of time to reading so we are really thankful for this awesome resource.
