Just checked the text of the Statistics Act. Section 31 does provide for a fine not exceeding $500 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months, or both.
With your attitude TK, I reckon you will get both
Yeah!
I saw the link. But has it even been used/enforced ? Any desi's in this forum who came before 2001 to Canada and did not answer the census could enlighten us.
One of the question in the census was our telephone number. We have a new telephone number now. So how can the agent call us unless he knows our most recent number? May be they might send an enumerator. Also i heard one of my friends say that the system here is so stupid that they send a reminder to a person to give them their current address b'cos his mails were returning back to the old address (Told to me by a desi).

TK,
Form did not have your name but the address you stay at. They go by the block number and not the person who occupy it. Report is compiled on basis of unit number or road number. They will track you down by the address and not the phone or person name. Better post it NOW!!!

Charlie,
You are a True engineer.
What you said is 100% true. There was no mention of my name in the the envelope.
Thanks for the logical answer.

Sidenote : This system will be a drag to people staying in owner basements or where 2 or 3 families stay in a town house/ apartment. I suppose that aspect will me minimal.
Also another flaw is that if there are 7 family members in a unit of the same family and the head of the house decides to include only 2 or 3.
Also they can track by the SIN number, how many people have the SIN number but did not include their name in the census and the reverse could also hold true. Anyway, all census information is kept confidential by law.
Sidenote 2 : I encourage each and every legal resident in Canada to fill his/her census form and send it to the concerned authorities.

People can file a bit late says Census 2006.
also this is interesting :
I quote from Toronto star : "
Although failing to participate in the 2006 census carries maximum penalties of a $500 fine, three months in jail or both, Ottawa is willing to give the stragglers a little bit more time, said Statistics Canada census manager Anil Arora.
We understand people
Five years ago, 52 cases of non-compliance were referred to the department; 44 were resolved before trial, three pleaded guilty and four were found guilty, while one was given an absolute discharge.
Arora said fines typically range from $50 to $100, and those convicted still have to fill in their forms.
No one in recent history has been sent to jail for refusing to fill out their census forms, he added.
Canada's census, which is conducted every five years, paints a picture of the Canadian population, helping to dictate federal policy on immigration, health, education and language. It also helps to direct billions of dollars in transfer payments.
At the community level, census results can decide where a new school, hospital or fire hall could be built.
Arora said the organization has so far received about 1.4 million questionnaires online and four million through the mail, which is about what Statistics Canada was expecting.
"We're seeing the same things we've seen in past censuses," he said. "Canadians understand the value of the census and support it, in the sense that their civic duty is very strong."
The 2001 census counted 30,007,094 people living in Canada, about 1.2 million more than there were in 1996. StatsCan expects this year's census to show about 33 million people.
Most households received a short questionnaire with eight basic questions, related to age, sex and marital status. One in five received a survey with an additional 53 questions on topics such as education, ethnicity, mobility, income and employment. "
