Ok, to credit Pink Panther, I also thought the other thread was about plants. Also, I am in a yard work frenzy cleaning up the rotten and putting up new perennials.
So, I do like some pointers on what perennials you have or had in your yard. I just put up a new deck and itching to do some landscaping and would love to know some ideas for perennials.

Well, like you, the last 2 months for me has been doing stuff around the garden too. Now, I am a gardening enthusiast, and want to create my own personal haven in my own back yard, and being a nubie to creating one of these, I had to do a lot of research on the net. Firstly because I didn't know my perenials from my annuals, and mostly because I knew that certain plants were poisonous for my dog if he was to ever ingest one.
I cut out a wiggly shape for my flower bed in front of my house and dropped a load of topsoil (about 6-8 inches worth) and then went about choosing some perenials (so-called because they grow year after year and you don't have to replace them after a year like annuals) that could withstand full sun, because the front of my house gets sun all day. Some of the ones I got are:
Coleus - the deep red colour one and also the green ones...unfortunately, my green one died
Chickens and Hens (they look like little green flowers that grow close to the ground...pretty-looking ground cover (no, they don't look like birds
)Hollyhock
Salvia (the one that gets red flowers, very pretty)
Zinnia
These are the ones I can remember...
Oh and we also got two dwarf spruces for either side of our front door, and they look fab.

I don't remember the names of any of the perennials I planted. However, I have kept a record of every plant I have in my yard. So I'll post the names after I get home this evening.
Meanwhile, good sturdy ones from my experience are the hostas (good ground cover and not too tall depending on the variety), boxwood (very low maintenance, bushy, grows upto 3 feet), and spireas, any type (very low maintenance, bright yellow or red hue leaves and bushy, grows tall and can be shaped).
I also planted a crab apple tree and a burning-bush tree. Interestingly, the burning bush started growing extra ones from the bottom. I scooped the extra ones (carefully) from the root and planted it elsewhere in the backyard. Now I have 2 additional burning bush trees for the price of one. These trees grow about 10 to 15 feet tall and the leaves turn bright red (hence the name) in fall.

Yeah I got a spirea too, the bright green one with a slightly pinkish tinge on the end and I got two hostas too...they are pretty small at the mo.
I love burning bush trees, they are gorgeous. However, hubby wanted to get a couple of maples for the backyard for now...so we got a green mountain sugar maple and a fantasy maple. So far, they are doing well.
You know, it matters what kind of soil you have too when it comes to how well a plant will grow. The soil where I live has quite alot of natural clay in it...which some plants can thrive on and other just wither away (I've seen it happen and it's not nice 
) Some plants need more acidity than others too. Ask your local nursery to get more facts about what kind of soil you have and they'll be able to recommend some plants too.
