Hi

I intend to get a new cell phone connection and thinking of going with the 3 year plan.

My reasonings:

-Cheaper phones. In most of the cases, free phone.
-Addl features with the plan. like addl minutes, free weekends etc

What do you guys think? Anyone tried 3 year plans? Any hidden things that one need to know before signing up for a 3 year plan?

Any advice would be greately appreciated.

Thanks

T

1. Loss of flexibility
2. Automatic elimination from future promotions
3. Heavy penalities for breaking free from plans

IMO, it is more advicable to purchase the phone of your choice (applicable to GSM networks only) either from local smaller shops or on the net and go for monthly or short term plans. The few friends I have known have always struggled to keep up with long term plans and swear they never will do so again.

Many CDs will opine against this, but I find this more suitable and convienent.

All the best. Do inform your decision and experience.

The cancellation charges are around $20 for each unused month in case you decide to break the contract. So, you can forget about cancelling the contract even if you find a better offer from some other company after signing the contract.

Hi!
Look at CD classified to get a cheap but good used cellphone. I got a very good one for $50 (must be worth atleast $100) If you canot get it , go to Dundas and Hurontario intersection. On the SE corner (Newin centre side), there is one Pak. cell phone shop. He offers cellphones at very good rate.
Try also E-bay, Craig list etc..
Join a FIDO scheme and enjoy.
DOnot go for Rogers. The rates and terms are not good. In FIDO even the pay as you go is the best in the market. They also offer phone schemes with unlimited calling and receiving for good rates.

I have 2 yrs cell phone plan with bell Canada. On my moving to Winnipeg, I had inquired with Bell for terminating contract. That would have costed me $200. So I decided to continue with their associate company in Manitoba. Here with the new company MTS I had to pay joining fee, activation fee and choose from the existing plan they have. In total I lost about $100 or so. Only benifit my bell contract continues and I will be relieved by one year.

Keep in mind Phone Number Portability is around the corner. So signing a long term contract at this point in time is a bad idea.

It used to be 2 years and now they are pushing for 3. Only the telecom carrier gains by getting you locked at a higher rate in for 3 years.

It is only a matter of time that after phone number portability is allowed cell phone rates would drop due to fierce competition. You might then miss out on switching over to the most attractive package/company.

That way, I must say India offers probably one of the most flexible cell phone plans choices any where in the world.

For now, if you wish to benefit from number portability, do what others have suggested. Get an unlocked cheaper phone with warranty if possible.
