I have a Rogers prepaid phone. I am now trying to switch over to other company, as it seems that Rogers discourages people from using pay-as-you-go phones and force them to use monthly plan.
- Who is better provider? Telus or Virgin or Fido? Koodo does not have prepaid plan and I do not want to go to Bell
- How easy is the phone number portability feature?
If this topic has been discussed before, can somebody please provide the link
I am a Fido user for the past 2 years (prepaid). I use mine for emergencies only. I use either $10 or $20 card. It is valid for a month. The SIM /Phone number cost me $25 or $30.
At $10, the incoming and outgoing rate is 30 cents a minute. There is no system access fee. You have free voice mail (but you need to pay for airtime when you access it), free caller ID etc... It is valid for one month. And any balance is credited to the next month's activation with a prepaid card. If at the end of the prepaid card time (1 month) you donot activate it, you will loose the money but the account will be held for 3 more months. Within the 3 months, if you donot activate it again, then you lose your SIM / Phone number.
$20 has the same conditions except that 20 cents is the outgoing and incoming fee. You have 2 more options in which if you agree to a $1 a day you get free incoming or 5 cents outgoing (something similar to that. Please see the website for details).
There is also a $50 prepaid card. Donot know the terms of it.
What a draftsman in our office does is that, he activates it for $10 and then at the end of the month allows it to expire. He then has a spare $10 card which he will use to activate and use only in the need of an emergency. He passes the 3 month grace period with it and activates it once more when the grace period is about to expire.
Let other CD's share with us, if there are better plans available in the market.
Hope this helps
Peace

Fido.
We use Bell.......
30 c / min for first 2 min / call and later 5 c / min. We pay $ 25 every 2 months.
Thanks for useful info, I wonder if some CDs have similar experience with Fido since we have two Fido sims currently and there is need to add one more so with three phones i beleieve they have a family pack whereby there is free talk between family.
any user experiences for family usage and should we continue with prepaid or go for contract? since we have our own handsets can we go for contract without Fido handsets?
thanks

How about the koodoo ones? No system access fees, they don't put you on contract (have a tab on the phone price that reduces with time, way less for a cheaper phone than a contract cancellation fee), easy to understand plans etc.
I recently got this for someone I know, haven't got the first bill, but coverage is great so far.
$20 - 100 free anytime minutes (evenings and weekends free)
$10 - unlimited incoming
$5 - Voicemail.
Phone cost (simple Samsung phone) was about $74, but it was $0 up front. So the tab is $74 which reduces by 10% of your bill (minus taxes) each month. (with the above plan, the bill is $35 per month, so $3.5 reduction of tab each month).
If, say, after 10 months, you decide to change plans, you have to pay Koodoo
$74 - $35 ($3.5 * 10 months) = $39.
Hopefully there are no catches I missed in the fine print which will show up in the bill, but other than that, the plan sounds really good.
