Hi friends

This is my first every post in this forum, I have been going thro Charcha and other useful articles in this site; it has been very motivating and helps me to build up my confidence when I reach Canada.

I have submitted my passport to the CHC, Delhi for my PR, I am not sure when I my visa will come. But I am hopeful it will reach me soon.

I was reading various articles about Housing, and cost of housing, cars and etc. but I was wondering if some of you could provide some details on cost of living for a family of 2 to 4 people (couple + child/children)

The average cost for:
1. Most important is Accommodation a rental house (2BR) will cost minimum XXX/- to maximum XXXX/- per month
2. Food/ Groceries (for a family of 3-4 people)
3. Car+ Insurance + Gas (varies with type and models) just normal second hand not expensive.
4. Personal miscellaneous exp. like cigarettes, drinks, sight seeing (for a family of 3-4 twice/thrice a month) etc
5. Other miscellaneous expenses like, Electricity, Utilities, telephone, Cooking gas etc.
6. Some domestic purchases and expenses (cloths, household articles etc):
7. Insurance for a family:
8. Tax component mini XX% to maxi. XX%
9. Average Total expenditure for a month

This would surely help new comer with kind of funds they can carry with them to Canada. I understand that the cost would vary according to the place and kind of individual taste, but I am just looking at an expense that one would have to shell out with some avgas salary.

Also would like to know what is the average pay one can expect for some various jobs. Since we all know that I will not get job immediately in their line of field. When we reach Canada we are sure that if I do this work I can expect atleast this pay/hour so that one cannot be taken for ride.

I am sure some of you would help me on the query above. Thanks and appreciate your help in advance.

The average cost for:
1. Most important is Accommodation a rental house (2BR) will cost minimum XXX/- to maximum XXXX/- per month

2BR apartment- About 700 to 1000 per month

2. Food/ Groceries (for a family of 3-4 people)
About 200-250 per month

3. Car+ Insurance + Gas (varies with type and models) just normal second hand not expensive.
Car - a decent second hand japanese make about 4500-7000 dollars. You can get cheaper cars but you might have (it is rare but if you are unlucky) occasional repairs.
Gas - depends on commute and whether your work place is nearby or far off and whether you commute to work using transit/car. Anywhere between 50-200 dollars
Insurance - If you have more than 3 years of good driving history from USA, then you may get as cheap as 140 dollars per month. Otherwise around 200 dollars per month

4. Personal miscellaneous exp. like cigarettes, drinks, sight seeing (for a family of 3-4 twice/thrice a month) etc
I don't know about cigarettes but I heard they are very expensive in Canada.
Sight seeing won't cost much if you use public transport

5. Other miscellaneous expenses like, Electricity, Utilities, telephone, Cooking gas etc.
Telephone - 35 dollars + any long distance charges
+Calls to India using phone cards (depends on how frequently you call) between 20 - 50 dollars per month
6. Some domestic purchases and expenses (cloths, household articles etc):
Clothes - Mostly same as in India. Formal clothes like suits etc are very expensive
7. Insurance for a family:
I will leave this for others to answer

8. Tax component mini XX% to maxi. XX%
I will leave this for others to answer

9. Average Total expenditure for a month
Depends on your life style and the place you live. Anywhere between 1500 - 2500 per month if you are living in 2 Bedroom apartment.

Also would like to know what is the average pay one can expect for some various jobs.

Minimum pay in Ontario is 7.50 dollars per hour (before tax)
