Did anybody watch the feature "The Terror Within" on CBC yesterday?
It featured a CBC reporter going to Britain and Holland and interviewing Muslims and non-Muslims in that country. It was very interesting and bit frightening programme. The reporter tries to compare the concept of multiculturalism in Europe v/s that in Canada.
The concept of multiculturalism is fading in Europe. The Europeans (read Caucasians) object to the fact that Muslims are mingling into the European society and embracing their country's values, but instead prefer to remain in their "ghettos" - mental & physical. The feeling has become bitter after the subway blast in Britain and slaying of Theo Van Gogh in Holland.(Theo Van Gogh is a filmmaker who made a film on atrocities on Muslim woman. He got killed by a Muslim man, who was born and brought up in Holland)
Now the politicians are taking the notice of this divide. For instance, politicians in Holland are trying to ban burqa in public. The immigration minister deported 26000 refugees back to their country of origin. Now, the immigrants are shown a video about the life and social structure in Holland. So if one is offended by display of female nudity and gay marriage, he/she may think twice before immigrating to Holland (For people who are worried about summer dress code of Canadian females or worried about immigrants borrowing money to go to massage parlours - think twice before immigrating to Holland - that country is NOT suitable for you). All the immigrant applying for citizenship test are required to pass a test that check their ability to assimilate into Dutch culture.
The divide in British society is also sharp. In one of the town, they have formed a party called BNP (British National Party) which is trying to preserve British culture and put brakes on immigration. The reporter interviewed some teens, and the hatred towards immigrants was clearly visible. The programmed also showed some Muslims who were indifferent about their "Britishness".
The moral of this story? I believe we should learn from these instances, and try to assimilate into Canadian society and embrace Canadian values rather than being wrapped in the cocoon.
Today, 640AM did a similar story in the morning and asked callers about their views on Brampton. And the essence of the programme and the callers was same - that people tend to "ghettoize" rather than assimilate into the mainstream.

I saw that program last night on CBC. It was really good report. Europe is having more problems with all these multicultural ideas. The biggest problem is mostly immigrants in Muslim community irrespective of their education or background their never spoke if they hear or feel something wrong in their community. They feel scared if they speak against this ideology then they loose respect in their community or can be debar from religious activity.
I never heard that any religious community speaks against all these fundamentalist and issue fatwa against these fundamentalist. But if any other person right a book or make movie they are ready to issue fatwa or dead summons.
They feel that it's there responsibility for taking care of all Muslim people in world their own way. What are about Muslim black kids are dying in Africa in their own community war and AIDS? There is no one for their community doing anything. Then they wait for aid from developed countries and use that money in bad way.
Things they are a changing?
