The Centre for Science and Environment on Wednesday came out with a fresh study claiming the presence of 'pesticide cocktail' in 11 brands of soft drink giants Coca Cola and PepsiCo, three years after the same brands were found to have contained pesticides.
The new findings, publicised after testing 57 samples of 11 soft drink brands of Coca Cola and PepsiCo collected from 25 manufacturing units across 12 states, claims that all the bottles examined were a "cocktail of 3-5 different pesticides" which was 24 times above the standards finalised by Bureau of Indian Standards.
"We have found pesticide residue in all soft drinks tested. Three years ago, when the tests were conducted we could spot only four pesticides. This time it has increased to five in some cases," Sunita Narain, director, CSE said. __________________________________________________________
Aside, they taste too sweet. Why so? Do desis love so much sweet? Is it sugar or the pesticide?
Chances are that the water is contaminated.
Adding carbon dioxide, sugar, artificial flavours and colours should be enough. You do not need pesticide on top of that.
Desis are not the only ones who have a sweet tooth. Moreover Coke and Pepsi are American inventions. Cakes, ice creams, etc. are loaded with sugar.

Ms. Sunita Narain, Ms. Jaya Jaitley, Samatha Party Mr. Suhil Seth, Managing Partner, Counselage and Mr. Singhal, MD, PI Industries were the participants in a debate on ND TV ‘s Big Fight. The women were strongly against presence of pesticides that were found in the colas, while Ms. Jaya Jaitley condemned the soft drinks as junk. Ms. Sunita Narain mentioned that in UK when they were 1ppb above the stipulated standards, the soft drinks were ordered off the shelves. Mr. Singhal’s contention was that 1 ppb was not a big deal, there may be pesticide residues, but within safe levels there was no proof that they were causing health problems. Mr. Seth ourightly attacked Ms. Sunita Narain as “these activists”, “hip shooters” etc. Supporting MNCs like Coke and Pepsi, he should have stuck only to scientific data.

The pesticides should kill all the bad bacteria in the gut produced by all the excess sugars - so what is everyone complaining about?
