I agree that this is the perception out there, amongst some desis I have spoken to. This may also partly answer why GG's publisher friend is a bit wary about promoting CD.

Y-me, I do not agree with your this statement. CD is not only visited by frustated young/old men or women who have flet they haven't achieved much in Canada.

Can you please let me know, how you concluded that one?

I would just like to mention some other polls to clarify your doubts.

Poll: What is your current job/profession in Canada?
IT/Software/Hardware/Data Entry 23.0%

Other 17.3%

Engineer 15.7%

General Labourer 14.1%

Accountant 10.4%

Technician 5.3%

Machine Operator 5.0%

Banking 3.9%

Supervisor 3.0%

Pharmacist 2.3%

Poll: After coming to Canada, How long it took to find a job matching your qualifications?
Never got any job that satisfied me 25.5%

Within a Month 19.0%

Have not got any job even after studying 12.4%

Within 3 Months 11.2%

Within 6 Months 10.6%

Within 2 years 8.1%

Within a Year 8.0%

Got a Job, But I had to study 5.3%

Poll: How much are you earning per hour? (Please answer only if you are in Canada)
$10 and more, less than $15 22.7%

$20 and more, less than $40 21.7%

$15 and more, less than $20 15.1%

$8 and more, less than $10 13.6%

$40 and more 13.6%

How did I come to that conclusion....well just reading through all the posts in the different sections of CD. I am not saying that CD is not being read by successful Canadian immigrants, but I believe their numbers are very few. Except for the Humor and the Restaurant sections in CD...which I believe gets the least hits. An example of a similar poll would be like asking readers/viewers of Fox news (conservative channel in the US) about President Bush's approval ratings? What answer do you think you are going to get?

These snapshot polls by CD polls are not scientific at all....they are not bad but all Iam saying people should just look at them and go hmmm :) and not take them at face value. I only raised this point when you supported the theory that higher education by immigrants was not making an impact in Canada and then to support that theory you were trying to back it up with numbers/data from (in my humble opinion are) scientifically incorrect CD polls.

Well Iam not here to raze CD to the ground just because of these polls. I do believe CD is very informative on various topics and gives potential immigrants or those that are going to land soon (like myself) a reality check :)

Peace.

So are you considering 14+22 = 36 percent people earning $20 or more a few?

On CD, charcha section gets about 25-30% visitors. Rest are visiting other sections. The poll is on the home page. So just do not assume people participating in the charcha are the only poll participants. And people visit CD for posting jobs, posting classfieid ads and they are not necessarily frustated people.

I do agree that we do not represent the entire population of Canada. And for that mater none of the website does. But we do represent new immigratns, especially from south asia, quite well.

And for a newly landed immigrant who is looking to upgrade his/her skill, such poll does have "some" value, as he would like to know from the people with similar background.

There is no doubt that CD fills a very important need. It does bring out the problems that people face. There are a lot of us who help one another via CD and it has been a valuable asset to the community.

It is also true that there are a lot of posters who are vociferous about their negativity towards Canada. One can see the trend in almost any thread. This also means that we see people blame Canada for each and every professional/personal/social/cultural failing to the point of irrational venting. This infact is one of the reasons why CD has attracted like-minded people. Misery loves company :). NOTE that I am not saying that its right or wrong.

For someone reading the site the -ves are going to stick out more than the +ves(which become obvious when someone has the patience to stay for sometime). We have seen this illustrated many a time when some passing poster asks why the site is so negative in nature.

Mr.GG, 36% is not a bad number of recent canadian desis recieving $3500 or more/month, in that case I might have to sheepishly retract my statements. But I still wont take snapshot polls seriously :). Like Jake mentioned, it could be that the negative posts have had more impact.

The only issue I had was with the education/upgrading skills CD poll . I have always felt that a higher education (Masters/PhD) in some good field in North America would always open doors for you. I have to admit that I have not taken age into consideration with regards to studies and whether it would benefit someone who is over 40 years (Although..I believe it is never too late to study).

A few months ago I had written my first post on CD, asking about the "Canadian Experience" and whether it can be overcome with factors like a North American education and the answer I got a few negative answers. Canadian Immigration was a big step for me as I could also have tested the H1 waters in the USA. Well I made it a point to get my resume and CV out there on the www (Iam in a health related field) . I graduate in December but luckily I have got work lined up in Ottawa with a organization in Tunney's pasture (thanks in part to my Department Head in the US). I was also able to get two positive responses for internships through Career Edge.

Iam not trying to promote education here, Iam sure good work experience can beat any good education but I do feel immigrants with a North American education would have an edge over others who dont.

Now I see your point. I guess getting a Canadian Qualification does not mean only Masters and/or PhD. I have seen Civil Engineers doing estimators course, surveyors course etc. Some people even try to learn computer skills even though that is not their primary skill area.

So the guys who responded negative might be from such segment.

Masters/PhD? Who can challenge them?
