Believe it or not, Venezuela pays $0.12 per gallon. To put it in perspective, let us work on the units of measure. One gallon = 3.7854118 litres, Google informs; so $0.12 per gallon means $0.032 per litre. Or, less than Rs 1.50 per litre. In gallon terms, Chennai pays Rs 196.84 or $4.28.
Price per gallon is $0.38 in Nigeria; $0.65 in Egypt; $0.78 in Kuwait; and $0.91 in Saudi Arabia, going by data available on http://money.cnn.com, updated March 2005.
In Puerto Rico, it is $1.74, while the following countries lie in the $2-$3 band: Russia, Panama, Nicaragua, South Africa, Lebanon and Taiwan. Cuba, Brazil, Bulgaria and Estonia pay more than $3 but less than $4.
At $4.24, Japan is almost on par with what we pay. Between $4.50 and $5 are countries such as Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Croatia, Luxembourg and Hungary.
Further up, on the fuel price ladder, in the $5-$6 range, are Portugal, France, Germany, the UK, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark and Italy. At the very top are the Netherlands ($6.48) and Norway ($6.27).

DT.... most of these countries where petrol prices are below $1 are oil producing countries..... simple.
The major reson for the higher petrol prices in India is basically çause of subside to Diesel .... as you know there is no diference in petrol & diesel prices (as in canada) .... but in India diesel proces are atleast 15-20% cheaper than petrtol. The logic is diseal is used by mass transport while passanger cars use petrol .... hence petrol prices are higher ..... as a car is considered a "luxury"item.
I am not sure how much is the diesel price in India currently, but it will be around Rs.35-36/litre. I don't think diesel is subsidised now at the expense of petrol. If price is Rs. 35 for diesel, then it is almost same as in Canada (in US it still more cheaper). Yes, LPG & Kerosene are susidised. Refining, transportation, etc. costs are almost same for most of the net importing countries (even in net exporting countries (where prices are not controlled by govt.)- companies sell their product at the current world price.

Desertfox, I am not sure from where you have got these prices (as the link you provided is of CNN/money current page). If the data date is March, 2005, then you are comparing current indian market prices with March 2005 prices i.e., comparing apple to grapes?

The saying goes "Lies, Damned, Lies and Statistics". It may not be true with the developed and democratic countries of the west, but is very much in place in India. Just before Diwali, when the grocery prices were going through the roof, inflation rate was mentioned as 5.28% or so. Where from, how and why these figures are arrived, God only knows. More this figure, more the Dearness Allowance to be paid to Govt/PSU employees and pensioners. The NPAs of nationalised banks comes to more than 100, 000 crores from figures released by the employees union. Can't the FM think about catching hold of atleast the top 100 loan defaulters? But it will not be in the interest of the business community. OTOH he has levied 12.25% service tax even for buying DD. The amount collected last year is Rs.20,000 crores more than expected. This may be a good achievement only during tyrannical Moghul rulers' times.

When we started discussing this issue in 2006 it was approximately Rs. 53 per litre. Now it will touch almost Rs. 75. The food inflation as of Oct'11 is almost 12.5%. The common man has been beaten black and blue by Man Mohan Singh for re-electing he and his Congress government. Unlike the government, PSU or private sector employees, the common man has no relief in the form DA increase.
The disproportionate increase has impoverished the common man over the last decade and proportionately enriched small pockets of rich, very rich and corrupt businessmen, bureaucrats and politicians.
We are hearing of farm suicides upto quarter million during the last 15 years, ref. Mr. Sainath's article in The Hindu dated Oct 30, 2011. All the activities, the government is encouraging like the IPL or F1 is raising lots of heat and dust, but nothing really for the common man
The history will never forgive Man Mohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi for their misrule.

Bangalore has a price of 74 rs. for one litre of gas. Delhi is cheap with Rs 68 as the price of Gas.
Gas price is going to raise soon.
A flat selling for 3 lakhs in 2002 is now around 60 lakhs. You still expect the vegetable prices remaining at 2002 levels?
In countries like India, where economy is booming price will increase.
Even if Mahathir Mohamad (Of malaysia known for his good governance) rules India, this situation will still be there.
Peace
