Hi
A cousin is planning to buy his first car in India. His objectives are fuel efficiency , reliability and ride quality in that sequence and has zeroed in on 2 cars .
Which of these is a better car ?
(a)Tata Indica EV2 LX : 1.4 litres , diesel , R14 top end model @ 5 lacs (25 kmpl)

(b)Maruti Alto K10 LXi : 1 litre , petrol , R13 @ 3.4 lacs (24 kmpl)

I agree with FH. As an Indian who owns aMauruthi car, I can say the following.
Indica is a large car (so you have ample space inside). Maintenance cost is high. Petrol consumption is a little high. The car will start rusting and parts becoming loose after 3 or 4 years.
Alto is one of the best , maintenance free car available in the market. Petrol consumption is low. The interior is very compact (good for 2 adults and 3 small children only.

Thanks FH & TK ,
FH ~ (Good to see you after some time .. You were missed )
The cost is expected to be higher by INR 50-100K for diesel vehicles .. so extrapolating that , perhaps they would come in the same price area ... Or am I wrong ? Good to know that Indica is peppy .... I didn't know that .
TK ~ Its the diesel version I m talking about and apparently the fuel efficiency appears to be very good. Thanks for informing about the rusting and high maintenance requirement.
Which one has a better ride quality ?

Fido.
Better ride quality is the Alto but it is a small car.
Indica is for the long drive and hence used mostly as taxi's.
Diesel is around 10 rs. lesser than Petrol but check if Alto has Diesel version. Automatic version is there.

The comparable car range of Indica in Mauruthi is the Mauruti swift (hatch back)/ Maruthi Ritz or the Hyundai I 20 (hatch back) or the Honda Jazz.
Alto K-10 is not to be compared.

Just a few additions from my experience of last month.
Better to check out all items fitted to car as mentioned in his brochure by a few visits to the dealer.
Nothing was mentioned about the automotive tyres fitted to the new car. But on the day we went to collect the car at an auspicious time and day, some unheard of brand of tyres in the Indian market was found fitted to the car. Most probably the tyres must have been bought on weight basis from some Chinese supplier. When we protested and asked him to provide reputed any Indian brand tyres like MRF/Apollo/Bridgestone/CEAT/JK, the dealer refused saying that it was OE supply and any change would affect our warranty. All we could do was record our dissatisfaction on the feedback form. We do not know whether it was Company Policy or the Dealer's 'handiwork', but the powerful Indian Tyre Manufacturers lobby must take note of it. Otherwise, they may have to shut down manufacture.
All this right under the nose of NaMo's "Make in India" Policy.
Also we cannot understand how the Dealer provided the list with mundane items like Kenwood brand speaker etc., how he can miss out on the important brand/size/type of tyres fitted.
Another item your cousin can negotiate is regarding the Vehicle Insurance. Again, our Dealer had told us it would be done only by him which was around 16,000 p.a., whereas there are others who have done themselves under Rs.9000/-.
Good luck.
