Anyway, I accepted the $325 quote and bought the car.

Try to get G as soon as you are eligible to take the road test.
That should make quite a lot of difference.
The other two options are moving (may not be possible for you) or getting a different car (too late since you already bought).
Even though most of the "imported" Japanese cars are made in Canada/US, they carry a much higher insurance premium than similar grade domestic vehicles.
I don't know if 2006 Corollas are made in North America or not, but in general foreign cars have higher insurance.

I have 5 years G experience , no ticket no claim. I just took a qote from state life they are giving $185 full coverage for 98 camary.

There is no control of the govt. They are eating our hard earn money. My friend visited me from USA he is paying only $88 for three cars. :p

Even with the Govt. control, there's no respite. Here in BC we have a public insurance (ICBC) that are equally money hungry (who's not?). I have 99 Camry, full priviledge driving license (class 5), and paying about $194/month. Being in profit for so long, they are now thinking about discounting the basic rate to about 1% for all car owners. Just 1%. Are you kidding me :).

So, my suggestion is to suck it up (sorry, to be blunt...) as you do not have a choice just like all of us or at least me. Or, as you mentioned above migrate to the big brother USofA for not only better rates in car insurance but in all round savings.

Good luck finding a good insurance rates.

I went direct for 'G' and got it. But that also was considered 'bad' by insurance people. This was given as one of the many reasons for my high rate.

As people come to most developed countries like US,canada, UK etc, we come down to earth. Here maintaining mobile, cars etc are very expensive affair :

Car Insurance is very high, more than cost of petrol. We require 300-350 for auto insurance + another 300 for petrol and keep aside 200-250 for maintainence of car. Every month $800 to maintain a car. whereas in dubai/sharjah, our car insurance for full year was 360-400 Dhs and petrol Dhs100-150. Which comes to $200 every month.

something has to be done with regards to auto insurance. Maye we should all stop driving cars and go by walk/TTC/bicycle.;) Protest.:)

dandi march and don't use car for one week and protest. I know it is not possible or it is next to impossible.

If you could keep your car for what it is for, i.e. going from point A to B then that does the trick. Try to keep only one car per household, as to my opinion it's sufficient. This is my monthly car expense. I drive to/from work 50 Kms/day:

Insurance: 194
GAs: maximum $130 (I go to States biweekly to fill up tank which runs for 1.5 to 2 weeks. I have renounced filling up gas in Canada altogether)
Maintenance: Just oil change when due (once in three months), and other maintenance on need basis.
Car Make: Toyota Camry 1999 CE.

Total = 324/ month

Moreover, I would be really very happy if I have a better choice to take Skytrain to work. But for now I do not have a feasible connection from home to work.

Although, my wife works at a completely off location than me, we never felt we had another car. To me if you can work it out with just one car, then there's nothing like it. Needless to say that We are going pretty well.

I have seen number of people(not a single Indian among them) taking bikes to my workplace has increased immensely over the months here in Vancouver. Surprisingly, even rain doesn't deter them. That's what we need more and more people to do in order to make INsurance industry feel the pain. It's more environment friendly and boosts your health while keeping your pockets intact :).

Ciao for now.

$200-250 for maintenance  ? Which car do you drive - Merc or BMW? Why this much for a regular Japanese, or even American car? As mentioned above, I pay $0 to maintain my 99 Camry, except for oil change every 3 months, i.e. $50. I wash my car at home too.

Do you know the color of the car is also a major determining factor for insurance? More bright and eye catching the color the more you pay for car insurance. Also, you will end up paying more if your car is more theft prone, e.g. Honda Civic, Acura, etc. Keep these in mind when buying a car.
