A friend is going to throw his parents a surprise anniversary party. In the invitation cards he wants to mention a phrase that is similar to many other Indian/Pakistani invitations... "please no gift boxes".
Now we all know that simply means "money only" please in a nice way... however, that is not the intent. Any suggestions?
One of my friend printed his wedding card this way:
Your presence required but not your presents
May be you could do this.

You can make a statement "no gifts please" and leave it at that. Or write nothing at all because it is not just a South asian thing. Many people do not feel comfortable going to a celebration / birthday / Anniversary empty handed.
If it is going to be a small party, can your friend call up the guests individually and explain that he/she has another idea in mind so they do not need to bring gifts?
