Hello everyone,
I am a new immigrant, going to be moving from a basement to an Apartment. I have a few questions and I request members of this forum to reply and provide tips to all new Immigrants.
-What are the things, a person (new to the country) should check&confirm before moving into an apartment to have a hassle-free stay?
-The things he has to clarify with the Superintendent before moving in..
-I saw additional locks by tenants in many apts, Is this advisable?
-What are the appliances/services we are entitled to receive from Apt. management?
Replies from all corners will greatly be appreciated.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.
-What are the things, a person (new to the country) should check&confirm before moving into an apartment to have a hassle-free stay?
>>>Ask that the apt be painted, cleaned, floors waxed/carpet cleaned and any problems(plumbing, broken windows) fixed. Check washroom to see if all is in working order. If looking for parking check to see if spot is in secure area. Also check to see the laundry room if its maintained well and well lit/clean. If you are givcen a locker area, ask to see the same to check for accessibility. Find out about the general area and how close it is to public transport, shopping/grocery stores etc.
-The things he has to clarify with the Superintendent before moving in..
>>>Check to see if its cleaned as promised.
-I saw additional locks by tenants in many apts, Is this advisable?
>>> Depends on the area OR for added peace of mind.
-What are the appliances/services we are entitled to receive from Apt. management?
>>>Stove/oven, fridge and in some cases dish washer. Any major problems...e.g: plumbing/leaks are supposed to be fixed by the landlord. Similarly the general area around(outside) the apt is supposed to be maintained/cleaned by the landlord along with snow removal, de-icing...to maintain easy access.
Those are some things I could think of from my apt dwelling years in Canada.
