Hi,

I am moving to Canada in March end. Wanted to know which mode of transport for sending cargo will be better. Air or Sea. Here By Sea they are delivering the goods only until port and then from there I need to hire Agent who will take local charges. Any idea folks what are the Local charges taken by the clearing Agents for 2 CBM volume. I want Door to Door charges if anyone knows about it. All the items are of Personal Effects hence I believe there should not be any Custom Duty. Total Cost of Sea until port in Toronto is coming to Dhs 700.00

Also I was looking for an option of Air Cargo as well. They are saying Dhs 10.25 per Kg.

I am confused which mode of Transport will be better for me as I have only 100 to 150kgs extra to carry alongwith me.

Any advises from u guys is much appreciated.

Thanx

yeah there shouldnot be any customs for any items you take for the very first time. Air or Sea it would depend on which is feasible. My suggestion would be to take all in one entry through air and then when they ask you at the airport upon arrival if you have any more cargo coming up. Do say yes, as it will leave an option open for you to bring more stuff after the first entry and it wont be taxable.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.

Thanx Asif for the quick reply. The thing is if I go for Air Cargo then the Cargo will be reaching before I reach there. In that case the goods will not be following me. The goods will be lying at the Airport of Cargo Division. I want the goods to be despatched before I leave from Dubai.

What do I have to tell the immigration people in that case. How to approach the Cargo Division on arrival? Will it be at the same place where Pearson Airport is located in Toronto. Can I take out all the luggage Cargo Luggage + Normal Luggage both together.

Pls reply if any one else also knows about it.

Thanx

yes u r right. But i think there is a way to book the services for a later date. You could keep everything ready give to the air services and ask them to dispatch when you are leaving or if you want you can have a store booked through them so that when you reach there you could get your stuf picked up.
Hope this helps.

regardin your worries on picking your stuff, you can either pick them right away as you land if it is with you or you can come at a later date to pick it up. Either ways would depend on your convenience and the arrival of your goods. Just donot foget to tell them that in any case you still have a cargo coming so that they don't charge you taxes on your first trip in or out. this leaves you with a flexible option of getting more goods when you need them.
thank you.

Couple of things to remember :

1) There is a storage charge at the airport here if you exceed a sepcific no of days. Which means you get a couple of days storage free and after that it costs a hell of a lot of money. Check that out.

2)Your cargo agent in Dubai can make sure that it leaves on the same day or flight as you but I do belive that if you want to clear it with your luggage (conveyor belt) its really expensive.

3) Door to Door is expensive. Do yu have friends here who drive???. If yeas then when u r here hire a U-Haul small truck for half a day and pick the stuff yourself.

4)If you can wait get it by sea cargo....will arrive in a month or so but by then you would have had chance to settle down and get your bearing right.
