The other day some one related to me that they did not find a single product 'made in canda' in 3 aisles he looked in at Walmart !!!!!

Where is Canda headed .... we know India is looking up...

Fido,

Isnt Walmart an American Company? Most american products are also made overseas are they not?

If you want to see real 'made in Canada' products - leave the big box stores and venture into small locally owned businesses.

MR ~ Can you please name some major exporting / production Canadian industries ??

Most of the products housed in various markets I have found them to be Chinese and this is a worldwide phenomenon .... Do you come across andy 'Made in Japan ' products on the shelves ??

Chandresh ~ Well thats the way of things to come in a pure demand supply and cost based Interntional market .... In IT industry at the cost of employing a Consultant here they can actually hire 3 in India and thats whats happening ....

I am not suggesting anything now , but I am apprehensive abt what happns in future .....

US is a different economy altogether and would find a work around as they spearhead in trechnology , defence and other areas .... Its Canada I think for 10 - 20 years hence

I was referring to products available in Canada that are made in Canada. However this is what I found online:

http://www.export.ca/app/catalog/exporters.asp
Directory of Canadian exporters.

Also listed by product categories:
http://www.export.ca/app/catalog/categories.asp

Another interesting site:

If you look around you, half the products (durables) that you use are made of what we normally call as plastic. Plastic, I understand is a product of oil, which china imports from various places and perhaps Canada too. So in any product, there are basically three kinds of producers - primary, intermediary and final. China produces mostly finished product, which most of the time requires imported intermediaries like technology and primary industries like oil.

I used to work for a company which used to manufacture textile yarn and PET resin and it was a big company employing 5000 or more persons. Now if we were to go by your analogy, our company did not add anything to the economy because they neither produced the shirts/pants/dresses, nor the bottles in which coco cola is distributed. Is that right?

Fido

Export and Import of products is not something that I am very familiar with.

Chandresh: Is it true that some items are manufactured here in canada but then can be sent to places like China to be "finished" ?

what is the real issue here? The economy of Canada does not soley rely on international trade.

Chandresh ,

I agree with whatever you ve stated .

Your post has reminded me what I was taught in history as a Child ... ' The Brits used to take raw material from India process it in finished goods and sell it again in the Indian market at higher prices.

No doubt production is at diffent stages but the max profit is made at the final stage be it plastic goods , electronics , clothes... you name it .

Thats the reason why industrialised nations have displayed a much faster growth then their agro based counterparts .

In 70 s - 80 s we used to hear of Japan and Germany who were leading technology ........... Around the turn of the century China has led the production based more on cost basis rather than technology .... thats why I stated 'Where have all the Jap products gone ?? ' Cost has beaten them ...... in the same way that Indian skills are in demand these days .

Does it make greater sense to produce raw materials and export them to processing countries and buy processed goods OR process the raw materials in your country and sell the finshed product ........ but that is losing grounds in developed countries because cost of living here is much higher leading to higher wages ....... ultimately leading the production to China .....

But thats digressing from my earlier concern ..... can we assume that due to the overflow and abundance of natural resources , Canada should be able to sustain itself in future ??

well, thats a very valid point.
I believe new industry (ies) would emerge going forward. They will have to start planning their career accordingly. Existing employees need to re train them selves in the new sectors of the future.

Most of the industry would still be there, however they will not employ people on mass scale. Some Industry like Oil and Gas will continue to develop as Canada has huge reserves.

However, still there were concern about it. Poeple were debating as what could be sustained there as already IT, Call center, Accounts and finance, taxation, law activities and many others are moving to india. They were asked to brush up their skills in Bio technoloy and nano technolog, but even that has slowly started developing in India and china.

So what should be done?

Think of future industries of Canada which can employ mass of people.
OR
Focus on sectors which cannot be outsourced to either India or china or What would be those sectors can you guys guess?
