I agree that one cannot generalize to a culture/group (though I get a laugh out of "IST" - indian standard time)
Dont you think it conveys respect to the person waiting for you - to be there on time..regardless of whether they are the client, or the professinoal or the friend or whatever?
I know business is all about the bottom line..but I always believe that what goes around comes around. Even customers/clients deserve respect.

One of our family friends who is a canadian desi member and invited another friend who is a desi too, invited this person home. They were waiting waiting for the whole day, the person did not turn and had no courtesy to call and tell whether he is coming or not. Desi's have to learn a lot about ethicacy, manners and keeping up the time. The whole thing shows, they have the chaltha hai attitude, no concern for other persons time or effort. They have to go long way in beating the westreners to beat in keeping up the time.
"If anyone has worked in certain latino countries, you will know their laid back attitude and their tomorrow philosophy and their casual leave..."
This is very true...they are even worse then Desis (if one feels Desi's don't keep appointments). We live in a Latin American country and witness to their everyday laziness...dilly dallying. Though it'll be wrong to say all Desi's are late or can't keep appointments but from my personal experience I've seen that many a times they don't (whatever the reason...forced appointment...or a genuine one...no need to be diplomatic or waste someone time if one doesn't want to meet.... refuse rather than be late or no show at all). Be polite but be firm if you don't want to be in an appointment.

I'm the owner of a Desi Restaurant and i've noticed that 95% of the desis don't even know that there is anything in the world known as 'keeping one's words/appointments'. And it's just a part of their life which they've accepted long ago.
Recently i was 3 mins late on a catering and the gentleman gave me a whole 10mins lecture on the phone at the spot which made his catering more late ofcourse. And keep in mind that this gentleman has been 10 - 30 mins late few times and have been taking our services for quite sometime, but ofcourse i can't say anything in return(The irony of being behind the counter & serving desis)
And regarding me, i must say that i'm very punctual and i have the habit of doing everything five minutes before time. And i never actually figured out how anyone could not notice that he's late and being late is a very bad thing!

I was wondering if anyone, self employed, to be more specific... feels that our desis are very bad in keeping their appointments?
I guess if we start this thread we will be able to understand why people do that and what can be done to avoid this?
